China, Iran Boost Cyber Attacks on U.S., Lawmaker Says. China and Iran are intensifying cyber assaults against the U.S., the head of the House Intelligence Committee said as he pressed for legislation to encourage companies to share information on hacker threats. China’s cyber espionage effort targeting U.S. industrial secrets “has grown exponentially both in terms of its volume and damage it’s doing to our economic future,” the intelligence panel’s chairman, Mike Rogers, said at a hearing yesterday.

“We have no practical deterrents in place today.” In a separate report on cyber risks to government computers, the Government Accountability Office said yesterday that cybersecurity incidents reported by U.S. agencies increased almost ninefold, to 48,562 in fiscal 2012 from 5,503 in 2006. The GAO report found continuing weaknesses in the government’s ability to assess cybersecurity risks and develop effective controls.

By PC Pro staff Posted on 30 Jan 2013 at 10:24 Apple and Samsung are waging a legal war around the world, accusing each other of patent violations as they vie for supremacy in the mobile market. The fight began last year when Apple sued Samsung in a US federal court, accusing the South Korean company of "slavishly" copying the iPhone and iPad.

Samsung countersued. The stakes are high, with Samsung facing sales bans and billion-dollar payouts. Judge rules out increasing Apple's damages claim 30 January 2013 - Samsung did not wilfully infringe on Apple patents, a US federal court has ruled, foiling Apple's attempt to increase the $1.05bn in damages it was awarded last August. The ruling removes a dark cloud hanging over Samsung, which could have been forced to pay triple the original penalty, in the worst-case scenario. Apple "not the first" to use round corners on tablets The ruling applied to the corners on the Galaxy Tab 10.1, 8.9 and 7.7. Judge refuses Apple appeal to extend Samsung ban. Google sends invites for 29 October Android event. Google has issued invitations to an Android event that will be held on 29 October. The event will be held in New York City and will be live-streamed on YouTube but there is no word on what Google plans to showcase.

The date, however, does seem to coincide with rumoured launch of the LG Nexus smartphone. LG is believed to be the next manufacturer of Google's flagship smartphone with little information on possible specs currently available. However, LG is not the sole hardware manufacturer in contention to deliver the next Nexus handset. Earlier this month, Xperia blog leaked photos of a prototype Nexus phone being manufactured by Sony. Dubbed the ‘Nexus X’, images detail a handset that is designed in accordance to the current Sony form factor and is emblazoned with a Google logo on its back.

The Android event will commence the week after the Apple and Windows 8 launches. Image Credit: CultofAndroid. iPad Mini Prices Rumoured To Start At £200. Prices of the iPad mini will start at around £200 in Europe, according to a screenshot taken from a German electronics chain. Media Markt has apparently put the prices and specifications of 16 configurations of iPad mini on its internal inventory system. An unnamed source managed to take a screenshot of the details, which appeared on tech blogs Cashys Blog and Flo's Weblog . The existence of the iPad mini has not even been officially announced.

But the screenshot from the electronic retailer shows the cheapest version - a Wi-Fi 8GB tablet - alongside a price of 249 euros - £201. The mini is said to be available in black or white for all configurations, with the cellular version of the 8GB device apparently going for 349 euros - £282. The most expensive version of the iPad mini - a 64GB cellular version - has a price of 649 euros, or £525, against it. But if the information is correct, it means the cheapest iPad mini is around half the price of the standard £399 entry-level iPad. Digital Diary: Does Technology Replace Memory or Augment It? Jenna Wortham for The New York TimesConcertgoers use their smartphones to capture a Miguel concert in New York.

Last night, a friend offered me an extra ticket to see one of my favorite new musical artists, Miguel. I quickly made my way to the event, where we chatted for a few minutes before the lights went down. Almost immediately, dozens of hands went up, holding softly glowing screens. I took a quick count and tallied no less than 50 cellphones and cameras, all straining to capture the show. In the past, this would have irritated me to the point of no return. At this show, however, I noticed something different. Maybe these videos serve another purpose, beyond being just grainy, shaky clips that serve as little more than proof of attendance and a source of bragging rights among friends. Of course, plenty of people still try to capture every moment throughout the day; it’s compulsive and endemic of the way we interact and share information about our lives through the social Web.
