Aerospace engineers have long known that ditching a conventional tubular fuselage in favor of a manta-ray-like “hybrid wing” shape could dramatically reduce fuel consumption. A team at NASA has now demonstrated a manufacturing method that promises to make the design practical. Combined with an extremely efficient type of engine, called an ultra-high bypass ratio engine, the hybrid wing design could use half as much fuel as conventional aircraft.

When I first pitched the idea for this column, I figured writing once a month about cooking with my kids would be a breeze. My kids help me cook all the time. But in the 11th hour I started to consider the number of times a happy cooking experience ended in a less-than-positive way - someone whacking someone else with a wooden spoon and getting kicked out of the kitchen; pancake batter being spilled down the front of a cabinet, eggs landing on the tile floor with an unmistakable crack. I hadn't thought about all the challenges cooking with a 6-year-old and a 2-year-old poses, not the least of which - for a working mother of two who has to plan her own life around school schedules, doctor's appointments, dance classes and play dates - is finding the time.

The scale and volume of the methane release has astonished the head of the Russian research team who has been surveying the seabed of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf off northern Russia for nearly 20 years. In an exclusive interview with The Independent, Igor Semiletov of the International Arctic Research Centre at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, who led the 8th joint US-Russia cruise of the East Siberian Arctic seas, said that he has never before witnessed the scale and force of the methane being released from beneath the Arctic seabed. "Earlier we found torch-like structures like this but they were only tens of metres in diameter. This is the first time that we've found continuous, powerful and impressive seeping structures more than 1,000 metres in diameter. It's amazing," Dr Semiletov said.
