Stonehenge Discovery 'Blows Lid Off' Old Theories About Builders Of Ancient Monument

“For years people have been asking why is Stonehenge where it is, now at last, we have found the answers,” David Jacques, an archaeology research fellow at the university, said in a written statement. Last October, Jacques led an archaeological dig at a site 1.5 miles from Stonehenge. His team unearthed flint tools and the bones of aurochs, extinct cow-like animals that were a food source for ancient people. Carbon dating of the bones showed that modern-day Amesbury, an area that includes the dig site and Stonehenge itself, has been continuously occupied since 8820 B.C.

Amesbury has now been declared the oldest continually occupied area in Britain. The finding suggests that Stonehenge was built by indigenous Britons who had lived in the area for thousands of years. Nearly all of today's Native Americans in North, Central, and South America can trace part of their ancestry to six women whose descendants immigrated around 20,000 years ago, a DNA study suggests.

Those women left a particular DNA legacy that persists to today in about about 95 percent of Native Americans, researchers said. The finding does not mean that only these six women gave rise to the migrants who crossed into North America from Asia in the initial populating of the continent, said study co-author Ugo Perego. The women lived between 18,000 and 21,000 years ago, though not necessarily at exactly the same time, he said. The work was published this week by the journal PLoS One. Perego is from the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation in Salt Lake City and the University of Pavia in Italy. The work confirms previous indications of the six maternal lineages, he said. This DNA is found in the mitochondria, the power plants of cells. "An OK Number to Start With" 40 Most Useful Travel Websites That Can Save You a Fortune.

El Nino Could Be One of Strongest in Past 50 Years

"El Nino has steadily strengthened over the past month and is now approaching strong category strength," stated AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson. El Nino occurs when ocean water temperatures rise above normal across the central and eastern Pacific, near the equator. "Confidence continues to grow that this El Niño will be one of the stronger El Niños over the past 50 years," Anderson said. "El Niño typically reaches its peak during the December through February period. " "Latest long-term climate modeling is very aggressive in strengthening this El Niño to near-record levels," added AccuWeather Meteorologist Ben Noll. "The strongest El Niño on record since the beginning of the 20th century occurred during 1997-98," continued Anderson.
