http://www.youtube.com/artist/amy_winehouse Much can be said about the late Amy Winehouse, one of the U.K.'s flagship vocalists during the 2000s. The British press and tabloids seemed to focus on her rowdy behavior, heavy consumption of alcohol, and tragic end, but fans and critics alike embraced her rugged charm, brash sense of humor, and distinctively soulful and jazzy vocals. Her platinum-selling breakthrough album, Frank (2003), elicited comparisons ranging from Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan to Macy Gray and Lauryn Hill. Interestingly enough, despite her strong accent and vernacular, one can often hear aspects of each of those singers' vocal repertoire in Winehouse's own voice. Nonetheless, her allure had always been her songwriting -- almost always deeply personal but best known for its profanity and brutal candor.

Singer/songwriter Gin Wigmore crafts emotional, intelligent folk-pop in the vein of contemporaries like Feist, Fiona Apple, and Brandi Carlile. Born in Auckland, New Zealand, her big break came after beating out 11,000 talented participants to win the International Songwriting Contest in New York, which resulted in a record deal with Universal Music Australia. Wigmore released her debut EP, with the award-winning "Hallelujah" as its centerpiece (a deeply personal song that dealt with the passing of her father), in 2008. A full-length debut, Holy Smoke, arrived one year later, featuring performances by former Ryan Adams backing band the Cardinals. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi http://www.youtube.com/artist/gin_wigmore

Her debut album, 2004's Bohème, peaked on the German charts at number three and yielded a wistful jangle pop single called "Das Spiel." Louisan released another album the following year, Unausgesprochen, which was accompanied by a couple more singles, "Das Gefuhl" and "Das Grosse Erwachen (...Und Jetzt...)." The album won several awards for Louisan, including an ECHO for Best Female Artist of the Year and a Goldene Stimmgabel for Best Female Solo Artist. ~ Margaret Reges, Rovi Annett Louisan is the stage name of Annett Page, a German pop musician with cabaret flair and the whimsical aesthetic of female-fronted groups like Sixpence None the Richer and the Cardigans.

Duffy

http://www.youtube.com/artist/duffy Emerging during the same boom of retro U.K.-based singers that launched Amy Winehouse, Duffy distinguished herself with a melodic, vintage voice that brought to mind such '60s artists as Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark. Born in the small coastal town of Nefyn on the Llyn Peninsula in Gwynedd, Wales, Amy Ann Duffy began singing at an early age. With a record collection limited to her parents' classic LPs, though, she had few influences to draw from. Her father's VHS tapes of the 1960s television rock show Ready Steady Go! thus became one of her biggest sources of inspiration, and Duffy started performing with various bands throughout her teenage years, sporting a charmingly retro sound that caught the ear of Rough Trade Records owner Jeannette Lee in 2004.

Esperanza Spalding

http://www.youtube.com/channel/HCpLYtvGMRZxI Hailed as a prodigy on the acoustic double bass within months of first touching the instrument as a 15-year-old, Esperanza Spalding has emerged as a fine jazz bassist, but has also distinguished herself playing blues, funk, hip-hop, pop fusion, and Brazilian and Afro-Cuban styles as well. Born in Portland, OR in 1984, Spalding was not well served by the public school system and soon dropped out of classes to be home-schooled. Returning to the public school system at 15, she encountered her first acoustic bass (she had already been playing violin for several years) and immediately took to the instrument. Dropping out of school again, Spalding enrolled in classes at Portland State University as a 16-year-old, and earned her B.A. in just three years and was immediately hired as an instructor in the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston in the spring of 2005.

http://www.youtube.com/artist/lauryn_hill Call Lauryn Hill the mother of hip-hop invention; with her 1998 solo debut The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the Fugees' most vocal member not only established herself as creative force on her own, but also broke new ground by successfully integrating rap, soul, reggae, and R&B into her own sound. Raised in South Orange, NJ, Hill spent her youth listening her parents' multi-genre, multi-generational record collection. She began singing at an early age, and was soon snagging minor roles on television (As the World Turns) and in film (Sister Act II: Back in the Habit). Her on-again, off-again stint in the Fugees began at the age of 13, but was often interrupted by both the acting gigs and her enrollment at Columbia University. After developing a following in the tri-state area, the group's first release -- the much-hyped but uneven Blunted on Reality -- bombed, almost causing a breakup.

Comprising three sisters and one brother of the Corr family, the Corrs blend the music of their Irish background with contemporary pop/rock and occasional use of synthesizers. The quartet formed in 1991, and was confined to regional popularity in Ireland until 1994, when the American ambassador to the country invited the Corrs to perform at the 1994 World Cup in Boston. The attraction led to a support slot on Celine Dion's 1996 tour.
