A new law will let young people complete their firearms safety training at police shooting ranges, even though many police departments say opening their doors to the public could be a costly hassle. The law requires all publicly owned shooting ranges in the metro area, except those in Minneapolis and St. Paul, to allow youths enrolled in certified courses to shoot twice in the spring and twice in the summer under the supervision of their instructors. http://www.startribune.com/politics/statelocal/150703345.html

March 30, 2012 – Ninety organizations today urged the U.S. government and Congress not to provide deadly attack helicopters to Indonesia. Indonesia has announced that it plans to buy eight AH-64 Apache attack helicopters from the United States. The groups warned that the helicopters will escalate conflicts in Indonesia, especially in the rebellious region of West Papua: “Providing these helicopters would pose a direct threat to Papuan civilians.” The Indonesian military (TNI) regularly conducts “sweep operations,” involving attacks on villages where innocent villagers are forced from their homes. The groups write that “Papuan civilians either flee the attacks to neighboring villages or into the surrounding forests where many die or face starvation, cut off from access to their gardens, shelter, and medical care.” Sweep operations are now underway in the Central Highlands region of West Papua. http://akrockefeller.com/news/groups-urge-u-s-not-to-sell-attack-helicopters-to-indonesia/

Senators to Pentagon: No troop cuts until Congress gets a say in budget - The Hill's DEFCON Hill

http://thehill.com/blogs/defcon-hill/budget-approriations/216765-senators-to-pentagon-no-troop-cuts-until-congress-gets-a-say The leaders of the Senate Armed Services Committee are warning the Pentagon: Don’t make any sudden moves without consulting us first. Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and ranking member John McCain (R-Ariz.) wrote a letter to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta Monday urging the Pentagon not to reduce forces until the congressional committees have authorized the 2013 Defense budget. The senators wrote “it has become clear” that the Pentagon plans to start making moves for the 2013 budget in the current fiscal year, before the congressional committees have been able to tackle the 2013 Defense budget request. “We request that you not take actions to implement decisions that would be difficult or impossible to reverse by anticipating congressional approval of what may turn out to be very contentious proposals before the committees have had an opportunity to produce bills reflecting their responses to the fiscal year 2013 budget request,” the senators wrote.

Pictures of Israeli Navy new AIP equipped Dolphin class submarine surface

An AIP system allows a submarine to operate without the need to surface or use a snorkel to access atmospheric oxygen therefore increasing diesel-electric submarines stealth and endurance. AIP offers diesel-electric submarines a remarkable increase in capability. The new Israeli submarines are to be nammed Tannin and Rahav. Tannin is to be delivered this year. Israeli Navy had an option for a third unit. The Indo-Russian fifth generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) is superior than the similar Chinese and American rival fighter jets which include the J 20 Black Eagle and the F-22 Raptor, a top Russian military commander has claimed. India and Russia are jointly developing the Sukhoi T-50 PAK FA FGFA for their respective air forces and have plans of producing over 400 of these highly-advanced fighter jets. Nerves were strained as an Iranian patrol boat approached the USS Abraham Lincoln at speed. A helicopter escort hovered above the vessel in a warning not to get any closer, and the grey boat, tiny compared to the massive U.S. aircraft carrier, eventually turned around. The encounter involving U.S. and Iranian boats, common in recent weeks, underscores rising tensions in the Gulf region between rival powers since Tehran threatened to close the Hormuz Strait, the world's most important oil shipping waterway, over Western moves to ban Iranian crude exports, Reuters reports. U.S. and Iranian warships shadow each other as they ply the Gulf in a standoff over Iran's nuclear program the West fears is aimed at producing an atomic weapon. http://nosint.blogspot.com/2012/02/us-navy-fears-small-iranian-boats.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+blogspot%2Ffqzx+%28Naval+Open+Source+INTelligence%29

U.S. Navy fears small Iranian boats

Fifty years ago this week the idea of mutually assured nuclear destruction was outlined in a major speech. But how did this frightening concept of the Cold War fade from people’s psyches? Today the notion of all-out nuclear war is rarely discussed. There are concerns about Iran and North Korea’s nuclear programmes and fears that terrorists might get hold of a nuclear bomb.

Wireless startup LightSquared might try to swap airwave licenses with similar ones operated by the Defense Department in a last-ditch attempt to save its nationwide network, The Wall Street Journal reports , citing sources familiar with the company's plans. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) moved to block LightSquared's plans earlier this week after testing showed its network would interfere with millions of GPS devices. LightSquared was planning to operate its network on frequencies adjacent to the GPS band, but tests showed its powerful cell towers would have disrupted sensitive GPS receivers.

Is the world counting down to “D-Day”? After US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta estimated that Israel would attack Iran by June, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned government officials against “Iran chatter,” A European diplomat based in Pakistan said that if Israel attacks, Islamabad will have no choice but to support any Iranian retaliation. The diplomat’s statement raised the specter of putting a nuclear-armed Pakistan at odds with Israel, which is widely believed to have its own significant nuclear arsenal.

The F-35 Lightning II’s transonic acceleration may not meet the requirements originally set forth for the program, a top Lockheed Martin official said. “Based on the original spec, all three of the airplanes are challenged by that spec,” said Tom Burbage, Lockheed’s program manager for the F-35. “The cross-sectional area of the airplane with the internal weapons bays is quite a bit bigger than the airplanes we’re replacing.” The sharp rise in wave drag at speeds between Mach 0.8 and Mach 1.2 is one of the most challenging areas for engineers to conquer. And the F-35’s relatively large cross-sectional area means, that as a simple matter of physics, the jet can’t quite match its predecessors.
