Federal charges against two dozen suspected members of an Indian gang were revealed on Wednesday in what authorities called a "sweeping racketeering indictment'' intended to "disrupt an extremely dangerous gang." The 47-count indictment alleges that the Native Mob's gang activity in Minnesota reached back at least a decade and included murder, assault, drug trafficking and robbery. Six suspects were arrested on Tuesday, 12 were already incarcerated in state or county facilities on other charges and six remain at large. The Native Mob has long been a terrorizing presence in south Minneapolis neighborhoods, Third Precinct Inspector Lucy Gerold said. "Anything that brings them down will bring significant peace to a number of people," she said. Gerold said the gang has battled for turf and been responsible for shootings, aggravated assaults and drug dealing.

Rick Perry signed in May and civil rights groups argue intentionally weakens the Latino vote to benefit Republicans. The DOJ signaled their concern that the map discriminates against minorities and therefore violates the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The DOJ would usually have to “pre-clear” such changes to make sure they don’t unfairly affect minority voters, but Texas chose to skip that process , putting the fate of the new congressional map in the hands of a three-judge panel.

NAIROBI, May 13 (Reuters) - A lawyer was nominated as chief justice of Kenya on Friday, bringing to a close a row between President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga over senior judicial appointments. Willy Mutunga, a former law school lecturer and chairman of the Law Society of Kenya, was chosen to head the judiciary and Nancy Baraza was named his deputy. Neither has served as a judge and both have a track record of pushing for legal reform. Their appointment is subject to parliamentary approval. The nomination of a chief justice who was not a judge was intended to make a clean break with the past and an attempt to reform a judiciary seen by many as corrupt.
