MALACCA: Malaysian fencing has once again found its way to the Olympics and 82-year-old Ronnie Theseira (pic), who is the first and only fencer to compete in the Olympics, can’t help but recall the distressing time he had to go through for the 1964 Tokyo Games. Although 1964 seems a lifetime away, the Malaccan’s memories are still fresh on how matters worked out in leading to his participation in the first Games to be held in the Far East.

“At that time the Malayan Fencing Federation (MFF), were not affiliated to the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM). At the same time there was talk of Singapore and the Federation of Malaya plus Sabah and Sarawak merging to form Malaysia. “My priority then as MFF president was to seek affiliation with OCM, so I went to the International Fencing Federation (IFF) based in Paris at my own expense to plead our case and secure official recognition.
