Over the last year, a wide-ranging public conversation about potential future applications of badges and the place of badges in our learning ecosystem has captured the attention of educators, technology makers, and researchers.

How can current and past research inform these debates? What are the most important questions we need to raise about the effective design and deployment of badge and reputation systems? We are currently designing a badging system for dozens of civic and cultural institutions within the Hive Learning Networks in New York City and Chicago, as well as throughout our organization.

We have also followed the rise of opposition, and sometimes confusion, about what digital badging looks like or is designed to accomplish. Towards an Integrated Frame Should every badging system aim to address all six frames? *Contributors: Introducing the DML Design Principles Documentation Project. Because much of the work takes place outside the classroom, administrators wanted students to create their own portfolios where they could demonstrate all types of learning and activities. Over those two decades, essentially the duration of my working life so far, every time I have tried to explain the magnitude of the disruptions (and the amount of potentials) that the network presents to formal education institutions (especially post secondary ones) the trump card interlocuters ALWAYS bring out to minimize the potential threat is “Accreditation.” Again, I’ll give you a second to stop laughing. But I contend that’s because, so far, badges haven’t tackled THE important problem, at scale, in a way that models how the net works – who do we trust and why?
