The William Blake Page

Nov. 28, 1757, London--d. Aug. 12, 1827, London) was the first of the great English Romantic poets, as well as a painter and printer and one of the greatest engravers in English history. Largely self-taught, he began writing poetry when he was twelve and was apprenticed to a London engraver at the age of fourteen. His poetry and visual art are inextricably linked. Singularity Institute. The Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI) is a non-profit organization founded in 2000 to research safety issues related to the development of Strong AI.

Singularity Institute

The organization advocates ideas initially put forth by I. J. Good and Vernor Vinge regarding an "intelligence explosion", or Singularity, which MIRI thinks may follow the creation of sufficiently advanced AI.[1] Research fellow Eliezer Yudkowsky coined the term Friendly AI to refer to a hypothetical super-intelligent AI that has a positive impact on humanity.[2] The organization has argued that to be "Friendly" a self-improving AI needs to be constructed in a transparent, robust, and stable way.[3] MIRI was formerly known as the Singularity Institute, and before that as the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence.

History[edit] Libertarian transhumanism. Libertarian transhumanism is a political ideology synthesizing libertarian capitalism and transhumanism.[1] Principles[edit] As strong civil libertarians, libertarian transhumanists hold that any attempt to limit or suppress the asserted right to human enhancement is a violation of civil rights and civil liberties.

American Cryonics Society. The American Cryonics Society is the oldest cryonics organization.[2] Since 1972 ACS has offered a program where members who enroll, are placed into cryonic suspension upon their deaths and then maintained in liquid nitrogen.

American Cryonics Society

This program provides for continuous funding so that the relatives of the subject are not required to pay for the initial freezing, yearly maintenance in liquid nitrogen, or eventual reanimation (should the latter prove possible). Members often provide such funding through the purchase of a life insurance policy. History[edit] The American Cryonics Society was first incorporated in 1969 in San Francisco as the Bay Area Cryonics Society (BACS);[3] its name was changed to the American Cryonics Society in 1985.

Alcor Life Extension Foundation. This "bigfoot" Dewar is custom-designed to contain four wholebody patients and six neuropatients immersed in liquid nitrogen at −196 degrees Celsius.

Alcor Life Extension Foundation

The Dewar is an insulated container which consumes no electric power. Liquid nitrogen is added periodically to replace the small amount that evaporates. The Alcor Life Extension Foundation, most often referred to as Alcor, is a Scottsdale, Arizona, USA-based nonprofit company that researches, advocates for and performs cryonics, the preservation of humans in liquid nitrogen after legal death, with hopes of restoring them to full health when new technology is developed in the future. As of February 28, 2014, Alcor had 973 members, 91 associate members and 121 patients in cryopreservation, many as neuropatients (79 of Alcor patients were neuropatients or brain preservation patients as of December 2013).[3][4][5] Alcor also cryopreserves the pets of members.

As of November 15, 2007, there were 33 pets in suspension.[6][7] Applied Foresight Network. The Applied Foresight Network (AFN) is a global web of university-based centres connected by a network of forums for professors, students, teachers, and concerned citizens.

Applied Foresight Network

The AFN supports informed discussion and social action on issues of critical importance to the future of humanity. The Applied Foresight Centers and the AFN Forums build on Futures Studies traditions of multidisciplinary perspectives thinking and enhance this capacity with transdisciplinary dialogue supported by the latest in academic research. Working on two levels, a key objective of the AFN is to support professors, students, teachers, and other concerned citizens to think globally and act locally.

Autonomous Applied Foresight Centers will set their own local agendas and collaborate with the Network on a strategic set of global issues. Outline of transhumanism. Technogaianism. Technogaianism (a portmanteau word combining "techno-" for technology and "gaian" for Gaia philosophy) is a bright green environmentalist stance of active support for the research, development and use of emerging and future technologies to help restore Earth's environment.

Technogaianism

Technogaians argue that developing safe, clean, alternative technology should be an important goal of environmentalists.[1] Theory[edit] This point of view is different from the default position of radical environmentalists and a common opinion that all technology necessarily degrades the environment, and that environmental restoration can therefore occur only with reduced reliance on technology. Technogaians argue that technology gets cleaner and more efficient with time.

They would also point to such things as hydrogen fuel cells to demonstrate that developments do not have to come at the environment's expense. Transhumanism in fiction. Many of the tropes of science fiction can be viewed as similar to the goals of transhumanism.

Transhumanism in fiction

Science fiction literature contains many positive depictions of technologically enhanced human life, occasionally set in utopian (especially techno-utopian) societies. However, science fiction's depictions of technologically enhanced humans or other posthuman beings frequently come with a cautionary twist. The more pessimistic scenarios include many dystopian tales of human bioengineering gone wrong. Transhumanist art has been defined by Natasha More as art that is based on the transhumanist principles, visions, goals and sentiments.[1][2] Examples of "transhumanist fiction" include novels by Linda Nagata, Greg Egan, Zoltan Istvan, and Hannu Rajaniemi. Transhumanist art. Transhumanist art is an art movement which focuses on the concept of transhumanity, a transitional stage in a perceived progression from human to transhuman to posthuman.

Transhumanist art

Transhumanist art claimed a role for artists as purveyors of futuristic aspiration and visionary thinking in an era of scientific and technological challenge,[1] questioning traditional roles of the artist, the era of modern art and conventional aesthetics. Instead its proponents advocate a future-oriented aesthetics, often reflecting transdisciplinary works in art, science and technology. Transhumanist Arts is an art period reflecting creative works of transhumanity. Just as Modern Art represents much of the arts of the 20th Century, Transhumanist Arts covers the late 20th Century into the 21st Century. Isolated brain. Isolated brain refers to keeping a brain alive in-vitro.

Isolated brain

This is done either by perfusion by a blood substitute, often an oxygenated solution of various salts, or by submerging the brain in oxygenated artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).[1] It is the biological counterpart of brain in a vat. A related concept, attaching the brain or head to the circulatory system of another organism, is called a head transplant. An isolated brain however is more typically attached to an artificial perfusion device rather than a biological body. Immortality test. The Immortality test is a variation of the Turing test. It tests to see if the essential data elements of a person could be extracted and restored into a recreation of the original person. The extraction would be performed using advanced brain and body scanning systems and then restored into a computer system that would be able to emulate all the memories and behaviors of the original person.

When the fidelity of the restored person is of a high-enough degree so that another person that was intimately familiar with the original scanned person could not distinguish the original from the restored person the immortality test would be considered passed. Media references to Immortality test[edit] Exocortex. An exocortex is a theoretical artificial external information processing system that would augment a brain's biological high-level cognitive processes. An individual's exocortex would be composed of external memory modules, processors, IO devices and software systems that would interact with, and augment, a person's biological brain. Typically this interaction is described as being conducted through a direct brain-computer interface, making these extensions functionally part of the individual's mind.

Individuals with significant exocortices could be classified as cyborgs or transhumans. Democratic transhumanism. Philosophy[edit] According to Hughes, the terms techno-progressivism and democratic transhumanism both refer to the same set of Enlightenment values and principles; however, the term technoprogressive has replaced the use of the word democratic transhumanism.[9][10] Trends[edit] Hughes has identified 15 "left futurist" or "left techno-utopian" trends and projects that could be incorporated into democratic transhumanism:[1]

Cyborg. A cyborg (short for "cybernetic organism") is a theoretical or fictional being with both organic and biomechatronic parts. The term was coined in 1960 by Manfred Clynes and Nathan S. Kline.[1] D. S. Halacy's Cyborg: Evolution of the Superman in 1965 featured an introduction which spoke of a "new frontier" that was "not merely space, but more profoundly the relationship between 'inner space' to 'outer space' – a bridge...between mind and matter. Blue Brain Project. Turing test. Simulated reality. Simulated reality is the hypothesis that reality could be simulated—for example by computer simulation—to a degree indistinguishable from "true" reality. It could contain conscious minds which may or may not be fully aware that they are living inside a simulation. Simulation hypothesis.
