Singularity Institute The Machine Intelligence Research Institute ( MIRI ) is a non-profit organization founded in 2000 to develop safe artificial intelligence software, and to raise awareness of both the dangers and potential benefits it believes AI presents. The organization advocates ideas initially put forth by I. J. Good and Vernor Vinge regarding an " intelligence explosion ", or Singularity , which is predicted to follow the creation of sufficiently advanced AI. In their view, the potential benefits and risks of this event necessitate the search for solutions to problems involving AI goal systems to ensure powerful AIs are not dangerous when they are created. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] MIRI espouses the Friendly AI model created by its co-founder Eliezer Yudkowsky as a potential solution to such problems. [ 3 ] MIRI was formerly known as the Singularity Institute, and before that the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence.
Libertarian transhumanism Libertarian transhumanism is a political ideology synthesizing right-libertarianism and transhumanism . [ 1 ] Self-identified libertarian transhumanists, such as Ronald Bailey of Reason magazine and Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit , are advocates of the asserted "right to human enhancement " who argue that the free market is the best guarantor of this right, claiming that it produces greater prosperity and personal freedom than other economic systems. American Cryonics Society The American Cryonics Society ( ACS ), also known as the Cryonics Society of America , is a member-run, California -based, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization that supports and promotes research and education into cryonics and cryobiology . Cryonics is the preservation through cold storage, usually with liquid nitrogen , of humans (and sometimes non-human animals) after legal death. This procedure is done in the hopes of eventual "reanimation." Any such reanimation depends upon future technological advances that are hoped for, but by no means assured or promised.
Alcor Life Extension Foundation This "bigfoot" Dewar is custom-designed to contain four wholebody patients and six neuropatients immersed in liquid nitrogen at −196 degrees Celsius. The Dewar is an insulated container which consumes no electric power. Liquid nitrogen is added periodically to replace the small amount that evaporates. The Alcor Life Extension Foundation , most often referred to as Alcor , is a Scottsdale , Arizona , USA -based nonprofit company that researches, advocates for and performs cryonics , the preservation of humans in liquid nitrogen after legal death , with hopes of restoring them to full health when new technology is developed in the future. As of February 28, 2013, Alcor had 983 members, and 115 patients in cryopreservation , many as neuropatients (76 of Alcor patients were neuropatients or brain preservation patients as of February, 2013). [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ] Alcor will cryopreserve the pets of members.
Applied Foresight Network The Applied Foresight Network (AFN) is a global web of university-based centres connected by a network of forums for professors, students, teachers, and concerned citizens. The AFN supports informed discussion and social action on issues of critical importance to the future of humanity. The Applied Foresight Centers and the AFN Forums build on Futures Studies traditions of multidisciplinary perspectives thinking and enhance this capacity with transdisciplinary dialogue supported by the latest in academic research. Working on two levels, a key objective of the AFN is to support professors, students, teachers, and other concerned citizens to think globally and act locally . Autonomous Applied Foresight Centers will set their own local agendas and collaborate with the Network on a strategic set of global issues.
The following outline is provided as an overview of and topical guide to transhumanism: Transhumanism – international intellectual and cultural movement that affirms the possibility and desirability of fundamentally transforming the human condition by developing and making widely available technologies to eliminate aging and to greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities. [ 1 ] Transhumanist thinkers study the potential benefits and dangers of emerging technologies that could overcome fundamental human limitations, as well as study the ethical matters involved in developing and using such technologies. [ 1 ] They predict that human beings may eventually be able to transform themselves into beings with such greatly expanded abilities as to merit the label " posthuman ". [ 1 ] Transhumanism is often abbreviated as H+ or h+ ("humanism plus"). [ edit ] Transhumanist currents Outline of transhumanism
Technogaianism Technogaianism (a portmanteau word combining "techno-" for technology and " gaian " for Gaia philosophy ) is a bright green environmentalist stance of active support for the research, development and use of emerging and future technologies to help restore Earth 's environment . Technogaians argue that developing safe, clean , alternative technology should be an important goal of environmentalists . [ 1 ] [ edit ] Theory This point of view is different from the default position of radical environmentalists and a common opinion that all technology necessarily degrades the environment, and that environmental restoration can therefore occur only with reduced reliance on technology .
Transhumanism in fiction Many of the tropes of science fiction can be viewed as similar to the goals of transhumanism . Science fiction literature contains many positive depictions of technologically enhanced human life, occasionally set in utopian (especially techno-utopian ) societies. However, science fiction's depictions of technologically enhanced humans or other posthuman beings frequently come with a cautionary twist. The more pessimistic scenarios include many dystopian tales of human bioengineering gone wrong. Transhumanist art has been defined by Natasha More as art that is based on the transhumanist principles, visions, goals and sentiments. [ 1 ] [ 2 ]
Transhumanist art Transhumanist art is an art movement which focuses on the concept of transhumanity , a transitional stage in a perceived progression from human to transhuman to posthuman . First named in 1983 by Natasha Vita-More , transhumanist art claimed a role for artists as purveyors of futuristic aspiration and visionary thinking in an era of scientific and technological challenge [ citation needed ] , questioning traditional roles of the artist , the era of modern art and conventional aesthetics . Instead its proponents advocate a future-oriented aesthetics, often reflecting transdisciplinary works in art, science and technology. Transhumanist Arts is an art period reflecting creative works of transhumanity. Just as Modern Art represents much of the arts of the 20th Century, Transhumanist Arts covers the late 20th Century into the 21st Century.
Isolated brain refers to keeping a brain alive in-vitro . This is done either by perfusion by a blood substitute , often an oxygenated solution of various salts, or by submerging the brain in oxygenated artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). [ 1 ] It is the biological counterpart of brain in a vat . A related concept, attaching the brain or head to the circulatory system of another organism, is called a head transplant . An isolated brain however is more typically attached to an artificial perfusion device rather than a biological body. Isolated brain
The Immortality test is a variation of the Turing test . It tests to see if the essential data elements of a person could be extracted and restored into a recreation of the original person. The extraction would be performed using advanced brain and body scanning systems and then restored into a computer system that would be able to emulate all the memories and behaviors of the original person. When the fidelity of the restored person is of a high-enough degree so that another person that was intimately familiar with the original scanned person could not distinguish the original from the restored person the immortality test would be considered passed. [ edit ] Media references to Immortality test Stanislaw Lem about his 1957 book "Dialogi" (Polish Press Wydawnictwo Literackie, Kraków): " I demonstrated that even if we had a complete atomic blueprint of a human organism and a device capable of reconstructing tissues from atoms, we would not be able to achieve a resurrection. Immortality test
Exocortex An exocortex is a theoretical artificial external information processing system that would augment a brain's biological high-level cognitive processes. An individual's exocortex would be composed of external memory modules , processors , IO devices and software systems that would interact with, and augment, a person's biological brain . Typically this interaction is described as being conducted through a direct brain-computer interface , making these extensions functionally part of the individual's mind . Individuals with significant exocortices could be classified as cyborgs or transhumans .
Democratic transhumanism Democratic transhumanism , a term coined by Dr. James Hughes in 2002, refers to the stance of transhumanists (advocates for the development and use of human enhancement technologies) who espouse liberal , social and/or radical democratic political views. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] According to Hughes, the ideology "stems from the assertion that human beings will generally be happier when they take rational control of the natural and social forces that control their lives." [ 2 ] The ethical foundation of democratic transhumanism rests upon rule utilitarianism and non-anthropocentric personhood theory . [ 5 ] While raising objections both to right-wing and left-wing bioconservatism , and libertarian transhumanism , Hughes aims to encourage democratic transhumanists and their potential progressive allies to unite as a new social movement and influence biopolitical public policy .
