Occult. Goethe's Faust. Sculptural depiction of Mephistopheles bewitching the students in the scene Auerbachs Keller from Faust at the entrance of today's pub Auerbachs Keller in Leipzig Goethe completed a preliminary version of Part One in 1806. The 1808 publication was followed by the revised 1828–29 edition, which was the last to be edited by Goethe himself.

Prior to these appeared a partial printing in 1790 of Faust, a Fragment. The earliest forms of the work, known as the Urfaust, were developed between 1772 and 1775; however, the details of that development are no longer entirely clear[clarification needed]. Urfaust has twenty-two scenes, one in prose, two largely prose and the remaining 1,441 lines in rhymed verse. The manuscript is lost, but a copy was discovered in 1886.[2] Goethe finished writing Faust Part Two in 1831. The First Part of the Tragedy[edit] Faust I, first edition, 1808 The principal characters of Faust Part One include: The Second Part of the Tragedy[edit] Faust II, first edition, 1832. Lucifer. The three founders, William Robert Woodman, William Wynn Westcott, and Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers were Freemasons and members of Societas Rosicruciana in Anglia (S.R.I.A.).[5] Westcott appears to have been the initial driving force behind the establishment of the Golden Dawn.

The Golden Dawn system was based on hierarchy and initiation like the Masonic Lodges; however women were admitted on an equal basis with men. The "Golden Dawn" was the first of three Orders, although all three are often collectively referred to as the "Golden Dawn". The First Order taught esoteric philosophy based on the Hermetic Qabalah and personal development through study and awareness of the four Classical Elements as well as the basics of astrology, tarot divination, and geomancy. The Second or "Inner" Order, the Rosae Rubeae et Aureae Crucis (the Ruby Rose and Cross of Gold), taught proper magic, including scrying, astral travel, and alchemy.

A hexagram (Greek) or sexagram (Latin) is a six-pointed geometric star figure with Schläfli symbol {6|2}, 2{3}, or {{3}}. It is the compound of two equilateral triangles . The intersection is a regular hexagon . It is used in historical, religious and cultural contexts, for example in Jewish identity , Hinduism , Occultism and Islam . Group theory [ edit ] In mathematics , the root system for the simple Lie group G 2 is in the form of a hexagram. Origins and shape [ edit ] It is possible that as a simple geometric shape, like for example the triangle, circle, or square, the hexagram has been created by various peoples with no connection to one another.

The hexagram is a mandala symbol called satkona yantra or sadkona yantra found on ancient South Indian Hindu temples. Another theory, though apparently not very substantiated, about the origin of the shape is that it is simply 2 of the 3 letters in the name David : in its Hebrew spelling, David is transliterated as "D-V-D. These days, we tend to think of those who believe in the occult as soft-minded, superstitious, new-age hippie-types who would rather commune with imaginary mystical forces than face cold, hard scientific facts. But it wasn’t always so. During the Renaissance, for example, things like Alchemy, Astrology, White Magic, Hermeticism, Cabala, Numerology were intensely studied by some of the best minds in Europe.

Literature from that period is often rife with references to the occult. The works of Shakespeare are a prime example. You might even say that the study of the occult was once culturally dominant in parts of Europe. And although the occult is surely culturally marginalized as anti-scientific gobbledygook today, many historians of science believe that the study of the occult played a crucial role in the development of modern science itself.

That’s not entirely surprising if you think about the meaning of the word ‘occult.’ The Occult History of Ireland...An Introduction, by Michael Tsarion...Irish Origins of Civilization, by Michael Tsarion... The Occult History of Ireland (A Brief Introduction) by Michael Tsarion Indeed, studying the history of the IRA (Irish Republican Army) is both interesting and revealing. It is a study that has, in the end, less to do with politics and more to do with secret orders and hidden agendas. The persistent student eventually becomes aware that, from the earliest times, some of the most notorious and conspicuous founders and leaders of the major Irish rebel bodies were in fact counter-revolutionaries.

Stephens had received some twenty-five thousand pounds, little of which was spent in Ireland, and in later years it was a matter of common knowledge that Stephens, besides being Head Centre, had also an agreement with the British Government, which threw a peculiar light on his immunity from arrest and his later escape from prison and leisurely retreat to France - Captain H. On the early years of the IRA, my colleague Jim Cairns wrote the following: He went on to remark: The investigations of R. History of the Occult in America. I think that if your intention is to study occultism and mythology, you should major in economics, focusing especially on monetary policy. (Just kidding!) In truth, many colleges and universities have established departments of religious studies, as opposed to theology or divinity studies.

Generally speaking, in the somewhat vaguely defined academic field of religious studies, historians, philosophers, psychologists, anthropologists, and sociologists take religion, religious beliefs, practices, and believers as their objects of study. This is a different sort of academic undertaking than, say, studying religion in preparation for a ministry.

It is also common for colleges and universities to have individual courses on religion in other departments, such as philosophy, literature, classics, history, anthropology, or folklore. Most academic study of American religious history has focused on the main streams of belief and practice. Studying “the Occult” in Colonial America. BOOKS ON OCCULT HISTORY.
