Hidden water pools. Tour of the First PassivHaus in UK. Photo: B. Alter This lovely looking Victorian house in west London seems deceptively straightforward except for a tiny plaque on the front door. It notes that this is the second house in the UK to reach PassivHaus standards. And that is no mean feat. Last year Lloyd outlined the challenges of bringing high environmental standards such as PassivHaus to this heritage house. Now we went back to see the finished product: it's the Livia Firth of houses. Photo: B. Tom Pakenham, creator and owner of Green Tomato Cars ( a green mini-cab firm) has renovated this house to PassivHaus standards. The year long conversion is finished now, and as can be seen, it is a beautiful, light and airy house and a showcase for people and architects wanting to have a green home. The essence of PassivHaus-ing is insulation.

The house is south facing so in the summer some temporary shading is needed. And what a job. Photo: B.Alter: Heat Extractor Photo: B.Alter: Outside back View Photo: B. Photo: B. Photo: B. Australian architect Frank Macchia combined curved elements with rectangular volumes to create an eye-catching rippled effect for this house outside of Melbourne. From the front façade, two taller walls distort perspective, while different materials and colors add to the vibrancy of the overall design. The effect of rolling, rising, and falling, can also be seen on the inside. Like the exterior, a range of materials are used for the interior, including wood, glass, stone, and concrete, but there’s a unity despite the variety. The interior of the Blairgowrie Court Residence is also dominated by chocolate walls and ample of natural light from oversized windows.

A-cero designed a big single-family house with a 1.600 square meter built surface in the outskirts of Madrid.

Here is the project description: The first sensation that this house produces when people go into the plot is that the building seems to be hidden between concrete walls and vegetable ramps that extend up to the roof. They are dyed in dark gray and contain, between them, vegetation areas that seem to climb towards the sky. The house´s façade show a spectacular organic view of the whole house and so even the hard concrete shows its most kind face. The back front of the house is totally opened towards the garden where the lounge, dining room, library, study and bedrooms are. In this façade the wide windows, the volumes set and the projections (made of concrete too enhance. The plot includes also an elegant garden, a small lake and a pádel track.

The original church was a voluminous building with a high roof lined with beautiful wood paneling and a choir platform on one side with two dormer windows. In total, the volume of the church was 3,000 cubic meters, which is around 6 times larger than the average family home in the area. The volume was far grander than the family needed, but there was no need to tear the building down as it was in good working order, so Ruud Visser Architects set out to design a ‘luxurious house of normal measurements.’
