Regular readers know I have been a die-hard Windows Phone fan since the beginning, after testing out an early prototype starting in July 2010 . The newly announced Nokia Lumia 928 and 925 devices look solid, but they also makes it clear that Nokia is being held back with incremental hardware updates while pushing as hard as they can with their own software.

It reminds me of the way HTC used to push Windows Mobile back in the day and we see how that ended up. The new Lumia 928 and 925 devices offer some incremental improvements over the 920 released last year with a Xenon flash in the 928 and additional lens piece in the 925 with OLED displays now being used on both.

The internal hardware (processor, RAM, OIS camera) is virtually the same, wireless charging is lost on the 925, the 925 gets a paltry 16GB internal memory limit on most carriers, and the same missing applications remain in the Windows Phone market. Mobile analytics firm RootMetrics this week announced a new report that provides a broad view of the mobile carrier landscape over the course of 2012. Conducted using data from more than 2 million call, text, and data tests, the "2012 Carrier Performance in Review" report found that Verizon won out in most categories overall.

While all of the big four fared well in calls and texts, data speeds and coverage pushed Verizon and AT&T over the top. Verizon, which had 4G LTE service in all 78 tested markets, provided the fastest download (13.0 Mbps on average) and upload (7.9 Mbps on average) speeds. AT&T, for its part, was the first carrier to average 20 Mbps download speeds in any market. May 01, 2013, 1:45 PM — Verizon Wireless has announced a new cloud-storage service to compete with Dropbox, Google Drive, and SkyDrive, but it's not really clear why anyone would use it in place of those services. Verizon Cloud comes with 500MB of free data--a paltry amount compared to Dropbox's 2GB, Google Drive's 5GB and SkyDrive's 7GB. Additional data is often more expensive than the competition as well.

Premium plans start at $2.99 per month for 25GB, and go up to $9.99 per month for 125GB. Both Google Drive and SkyDrivecharge lower rates for their paid storage plans. For mobile apps, Verizon Cloud supports Android for now, with iPhone support coming soon, but the app won't work on non-Verizon phones and tablets. Users can also access their files through a web browser or download desktop apps for Windows, Mac, and Linux, but a Verizon login is required to access any documents that are stored online.

What is it good for? Verizon Cloud isn't completely useless. Inside Verizon's Boston Innovation Center (Video) CIO — Verizon Wireless, one of the nation's leading wireless carriers, knows that if it wants to keep pace in the fast-moving wireless market, it needs to not only maintain a speedy and reliable network, but also work with companies to develop products that leverage that network. Verizon does not charge any fee for participation, it requires no rights to intellectual property (IP), and it does not demand exclusivity on products and services developed inside its Innovation Centers. As a result, companies can develop products that are compatible with a variety of networks. Since. Verizon Launches Dropbox-Like Cloud Storage App for Android. Verizon on Tuesday announced a new Dropbox-like app for Android devices that lets users back up and access their files in the cloud. The app, dubbed Verizon Cloud, will begin rolling out for smartphones and tablets in the coming weeks, the wireless carrier said.

Described as a secure storage app, Verizon Cloud backs up photos, videos, music, documents, text messages, and other files from a user's phone in the cloud. Once data is backed up, it is accessible from any compatible smartphone, tablet, desktop, laptop, or on the web. The app will also allow for the transfer of "some content" between Android and iOS devices, Verizon said. In addition, users can back up content from their PC or Mac's hard drive to their Verizon Cloud using a separate downloadable desktop client. After adding it to Verizon Cloud, that content will be accessible on a user's mobile device. The app should make the process of upgrading or replacing a lost device a little easier, Verizon said. Contrary to popular beliefs which pegged the Nokia Catwalk to be the Nokia Lumia 928, looks like both the devices will be completely different. One factor which makes us believe that Nokia Catwalk will be different from Nokia Lumia 928 from the images is the body. However, the picture of the Lumia 928 does not look like an aluminium body. Another interesting feature we observe is the camera on the back of the phone. Another possibility that strikes us is that the bar is not a flash but a speaker grill. Nokia Lumia 928 Image Courtesy: @evleaks. Nokia Lumia 928 outed in Vanity Fair ad | Mobile. The long-rumored Nokia Lumia 928 Windows Phone-based handset is real, and it's heading to Verizon. Engadget on Tuesday posted an image of an ad for the Lumia 928 in the latest issue of Vanity Fair magazine.

The ad shows a device being held in a person's hand as he or she captures a photo or video of a family at the beach. Verizon's logo, along with the Nokia logo, sit just above the screen. The ad copy isn't completely legible in the Engadget photo, but clearly is promoting Nokia's PureView camera technology , the camera's Carl Zeiss optics, and its ability to capture images "even in low light.

" In the Vanity Fair ad, the device's name -- the Nokia Lumia 928 -- is clearly stated. Nokia, however, has remained a bit more secretive on its Web site, saying only that users should "stay tuned for updates about the newest Nokia Lumia. " The image on that page, however, is the same, and the link says "lumia928. " For now, Nokia has not revealed any details on the device. Nokia’s 928′s PureView Beats the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3 in Camera Test. The best camera is often the one that you’ve got on you. And in their latest marketing video, Nokia is also trying to prove that.

Apple has declared the iPhone to be the world’s most popular camera, and Flickr’s statistics still prove that to be true. But Nokia is fighting back really hard. After making waves with the camera in their 808 phone, they’re showing that the camera in their new 928 Pureview phone is better than both the iPhone’s and the Galaxy S3′s. Upon looking at the footage in the video below, it actually seems to be quite true. The sensor may be better and the company touts the Carl Zeiss optics as well. After looking at lots and lots of iPhone footage, it actually seems like the video may not be hiding much in terms of legitimacy.
