Flipped classroom eli suomeksi käänteinen luokkahuone (myös käänteinen opetus/oppiminen) tarkoittaa sitä, että opettaja jakaa luentonsa etukäteen opiskelijoiden katsottavaksi esim. YouTube-videona, jolloin opettajalla jää tunnilla enemmän aikaa vuorovaikutukseen opiskelijoiden kanssa. Matkan varrella flipped classroomiin on liitetty jos jonkinlaista tämän hetken muotisanaa, mutta tuota se tarkoittaa. Ideahan on mahtava: kun ollaan yhdessä koolla, niin aikaa ei kannata tuhlata siihen, että yksi puhuu ja muut kuuntelevat.

Flipped classroomin perusidea on vapauttaa oppitunnit tiedon prosessointiin ja konkretisoimiseen, jolloin oppilaan on helpompi ottaa tieto käyttöön arkielämässä. Flipped Classroom on mielenkiintoinen konstruktivistisen oppimiskäsityksen suuntaus, joka yhdistää konstruktivismin perusajatuksia itseohjautuvuudesta, tiedon rakentamisesta ja tulkitsemisesta järkevällä tavalla tvt:n käyttöön opetuksessa. Yksinkertaistettuna Flipped Classroomia voidaan ajatella todellakin käännettynä opetuksena, jossa oppilas kotiläksynä, omalla ajallaan, kuuntelee, lukee, katsoo oppitunnin materiaalin, oli se sitten luentotaltiointi, video tai vaikkapa teksti. Oppitunti taas käytetään tiedon ymmärtämiseen ja haltuunottoon. Taustalla on kuitenkin syvällisempi kuva oppimisesta, joka haastaa tämänhetkisen opetuksen ja opetusmenetelmät. Tabletit sopivat hyvin opiskeluvälineeksi Flipped Classroom metodiin, sillä ne mahdollistava rikkaan ja monimuotoisen median käytön ja tuottamisen. I have to admit, the flip wasn’t the same economic and political entity then that it is now. And in some ways, I think that matters. Here’s the thing. When I first encountered the flip, it seemed like a viable way to help deal with the large and sometimes burdensome amount of content included in my senior Biology & Chemistry curricula. IPads in classrooms offer such a new learning environment that they demand a shift from the idea of students being passive receivers of learning and demand real engagement and learning ownership by the students themselves.
However, even the original 90s design of the Flipped Classroom designed by pioneers like Eric Mazur is still teacher centred. Although students are individually watching the video lessons in their own time and at their own pace and then arrive in class with more specific questions, the approach is still driven by the teacher and focused on the linear course of study that the teacher designs to start at point A, travel through to point Z and then sit an exam in that specific content. Yes, the Flipped Classroom (Video lessons watched before class time) is a fashionable topic but whilst there’s still chalk-and-talk together with standardised testing I feel I must continue to push it.
And no, it’s not just chalk-and-talk in disguise. It creates a whole new learning environment for the student. I haven’t taught a whole class for 6 months! All my teaching is now one-to-one and not surprisingly, my grades are soaring. In the classroom I only teach individual students the specific points they highlight as unclear after watching the video lesson and I monitor progress on the projects they’ve designed to prove understanding of the content.
