Werner Herzog on death, danger and the end of the world | Film. Some years ago, Werner Herzog was on an internal flight somewhere in Colorado and the plane's landing gear wouldn't come down. They would have to make an emergency landing. The runway was covered in foam and flanked by scores of fire engines.

"We were ordered to crouch down with our faces on our knees and hold our legs," says Herzog, "and I refused to do it. " The stewardess was very upset, the co-pilot came out from the cabin and ordered him to do as he was told. "I said, 'If we perish I want to see what's coming at me, and if we survive, I want to see it as well. I'm not posing a danger to anyone by not being in this shitty, undignified position.'" Herzog's fictional features often entertain notions of civilisation fallen apart – from the mini-revolution in Even Dwarfs Started Small to the semi-abstract deserts of Fata Morgana to the psychotic barbarism of Aguirre, Wrath Of God.

In his latest documentary, Herzog faces death more squarely than ever. Not even you? Vincent Cassel: 'You can't escape from what you are' | Film | The Observer. Vincent Cassel, shot on location at La Maison Champs Elysées – see large image for fashion detail. Photograph: Joanna Van Mulder for the Observer. Vincent Cassel is very charming. He knows it. A Dangerous Method Production year: 2011 Countries: Rest of the world, UK Runtime: 99 mins Directors: David Cronenberg Cast: Andre Hennicke, Arndt Schwering-Sohnrey, Keira Knightley, Michael Fassbender, Mignon Reme, Sarah Gadon, Viggo Mortensen, Vincent Cassel More on this film Once the photos are done, we take a seat in an adjoining room in what is quite possibly the hippest hotel in Paris, full of cleverly angled mirrors and low-slung light bulbs that keep knocking against your head.

Cassel has to ask as English is merely one of the languages he speaks – the others being his native French, Russian (which he learnt for a role) and Brazilian Portuguese (he and his ridiculously beautiful wife, the actress Monica Bellucci, have a home in Rio de Janeiro). His father died in 2007. Steve McQueen: 'I could never make American movies – they like happy endings' | From the Observer | The Observer.

You've followed 2008's Hunger with the searing drama Shame, which stars Michael Fassbender as a sex addict living in New York. Is being in film still exciting? It's a bit Wizard of Oz-like. I admit I was excited about Cannes when Hunger launched there and then that was a success and I went to Hollywood for the first time and, my God, I was thrilled, you know, seeing the big letters: HOLLYWOOD.

But after a few dinners with people and drinks parties, you realise it's all about rolling up your sleeves. I got on the Paramount lot for the first time and, yes, I saw gladiators walking by and elephants and then you see the scaffolding and the trucks and it is all just work. Ha.
