Independent contractors (ICs) can charge for their services in a variety of ways, such as a fixed amount for an entire project, an hourly fee, or a sales commission. No matter how you bill clients, however, you first need to figure out how much to charge -- even if you charge a fixed fee for the whole project. You can't determine how much your fixed fee should be unless you know roughly how many hours the job will take and what you need to earn per hour to make it worth your while. If you're experienced in your field, you probably already know what to charge because you are familiar with market conditions.

Or: Why work 8 hours/day for someone else when you can work 16 hours/day for yourself? I've been a consultant of one form or another since 1985 when I started my old company, V-Systems, with a friend from college, and actually did bits and pieces of consulting as early as 1982. I have been asked often about the business, and I decided to write this up. Please note that I am providing observations from my own personal experience, but I am not providing tax or legal advice. You need to pay somebody for that, and I'm not qualified. Furthermore, I am not even attempting to make this a comprehensive guide for everything required by one in or contemplating the consulting business.

So you want to be a consultant...?

Consultant fee sticker shock

Consultant fee rates sometimes give potential clients sticker shock. That’s because consultant fees and per diem rates sound really high if you’re comparing them to the daily rate at a regular job. However, as my lengthy and detailed post on setting consulting fee rates shows, consulting fees have to account for costs a regular job doesn’t cover.

Consulting fees, consulting fees…How do you set consulting fees? Here’s a guide to setting consulting fee rates . (It’s also applicable to those wondering how to set consultancy fees — an independent consultant is still a consultancy and so is a freelancer!) When you become a consultant, you’ll need to set consulting fees. Consultant pay and fees can be worked out in several ways. Here’s some information to help you figure out what clients should pay a consultant (some clients are still prone to consultant fee sticker shock , though). http://consultantjournal.com/blog/setting-consulting-fee-rates
