Officevibe: Employee Pulse Surveys. Startup Culture: Values vs. Vibe. I hear some form of the following question a lot from founders that are starting to have early success: “How do we hire a bunch of new people and grow the company quickly without losing the culture we’ve worked so hard to establish?”

Startup Culture: Values vs. Vibe

I’ve been fascinated by different company cultures for as long as I can remember (maintaining culture is also a hot topic at our CEO Lunches each month) and I’m frequently asking entrepreneurs to describe the culture of their companies. Over time I’ve come to realize that when you break down culture descriptions you’ll often find a mix of two components: values and vibe.

Although each component can have a significant impact on the overall feel of a company, the way you establish and manage the two should be different. Values are a collection of guiding (usually positive) principles of what an individual (or society) deems to be correct and proper in life (or business) in regards to personal (or professional) conduct. When called upon to articulate our values, often we are at a loss to come up with the appropriate words. In order to assist you in that process, I’ve enumerated a list below of 243 individual values. Naturally, this is not a complete list, but I hope will be of use. Rather than simply list all of the values alphabetically, I have attempted to create groupings where values that have some congruency are near one another. You should use this list in conjunction with exercises to determine your core values.
