Spiritual Gifts in the PCA. Key Terms. Seminars By Title. What Sin Desires. There was a time when God walked and talked with the people he created. This must have been an amazing experience for Adam and Eve. But alas, it was a short-lived experience. One evening God came to the garden for his evening stroll and Adam and the woman were nowhere to be found. They had heard the sound of him and they had been terrified. They heard that sound and instead of rushing to him they ran away from him. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked.

As a child there were days when I looked forward to my father coming home. And then there were days when I was terrified when dad came home. It is notable that Adam and Eve hid themselves from the presence of the Lord, from the face of God. This can manifest itself in another, similar way. Hate and abandonment—here is how we act when we have sinned against another. There are many lessons we can draw from the description of man’s fall into sin. Time To Stop Looking In And Start Looking Up – Tullian Tchividjian. A shift has taken place in the Evangelical church with regard to the way we think about the gospel and it’s far from simply an ivory tower conversation.

This shift effects us on the ground of everyday life. In his book Paul: An Outline of His Theology , famed Dutch Theologian Herman Ridderbos (1909 – 2007) summarizes this shift which took place following Calvin and Luther. It was a sizable but subtle shift which turned the focus of salvation from Christ’s external accomplishment to our internal appropriation: While in Calvin and Luther all the emphasis fell on the redemptive event that took place with Christ’s death and resurrection, later under the influence of pietism, mysticism and moralism, the emphasis shifted to the individual appropriation of the salvation given in Christ and to it’s mystical and moral effect in the life of the believer.

With this shift came a renewed focus on the internal life of the individual. As Sinclair Ferguson writes in his book :

The Incarnation. Law and Gospel. 40 Questions on Interpreting the Bible. Particular atonement. Why Lewis Loved the Law. Many moons ago when I was a little more svelte and the fast twitch muscles twitched a little bit faster, I ran cross country and track.

Why Lewis Loved the Law

I was either so good or so bad that I think I tried every event in track at least once. I especially liked distance running. Today long distance means running for thirty minutes straight and trying not to empty my inhaler in the process, but back in high school and college I could run for eight or ten or twelve miles and talk the whole way. One of the things we talked about, I must confess, is how we might trim the day’s workout just a wee bit. I was of the Malachi school of running—no harm in cutting a few corners (Mal. 1:6-8, 13). It’s true in life, as it’s true in running around muck fields, that the right way to go is also the best way to go.
