In this post I will repeat the favor for funnel charts. These are not the funnel charts which are also called tornado charts, and in some circles are used to construct population pyramids (see Tornado Charts and Tornado Charts and Dot Plots elsewhere on PeltierTech.com). These are stacked 3D abominations which sometimes follow a flawed analogy to a physical funnel, just like the pyramid charts in my previous example follow a flawed analogy to an actual pyramid. The first example of a funnel chart comes from the FusionCharts Free Chart Gallery. This example shows the flawed analogy I’ve alluded to, which indicates that some quantity goes from a large number to a small number, starting with website visits, only a fraction of which result in downloads, and only a fraction of those result in inquiries about purchase, etc.
A second version of this chart is hardly better. GE Data Visualization. McKinsey Web 2.0 Visualization. For the past seven years, thousands of executives from around the world—across a range of industries and functional areas—have responded to a McKinsey survey on how organizations are using social (or Web 2.0) technologies. In 2009 we created an interactive tool that links the data from these survey results and charts it to the emerging trends in Web 2.0 adoption.
This interactive focuses on several of the survey’s core questions—from what technologies and tools companies view as most important to what kind of investments, if any, organizations plan to make in Web 2.0 in the future. Our most recent survey examines the business use of 13 social technologies and tools: blogs, collaborative document editing, mash-ups (a Web application that combines multiple sources of data into a single tool), microblogging, online videoconferencing, podcasts, prediction markets, rating, RSS (Really Simple Syndication), social networking, tagging, video sharing, and wikis. Visualize your thoughts with a mind map! I have recently discovered “mind mapping.” Mind mapping is not a new concept, but since I (re)learned it, I’ve found it to be an excellent tool for analyzing business problems and processes. I thought you might find it interesting too! Here’s an example: The other day, I was thinking about all of the different elements within an organization that need to exist and interact to make business analytics a reality. I started to scribble a list on a sheet of paper: I created some high level categories around people, process, data and technology, and then brainstormed all the different things associated with those categories that I could think of.
The more I scribbled away, the more things I began to think of and my scribbles became a mess of notes that didn’t really represent what I wanted to convey. What I really wanted to do was visually present my concept in a way that showed the interactions and dependencies between the functions. Enter the mind map. Why is the mind map all new again? Nightingale's 'Coxcombs' Through her work as a nurse in the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale was a pioneer in establishing the importance of sanitation in hospitals. She meticulously gathered data on relating death tolls in hospitals to cleanliness, and, because of her novel methods of communicating this data, she was also a pioneer in applied statistics. We explore the work of Nightingale, and in particular focus on her use of certain graphs which, following misreading of her work, are now commonly known as 'coxcombs'. In March 1854 war broke out between France, Great Britain, Sardinia, and the Ottoman Empire on one side, and Russia on the other side. Most of the fighting in the war occurred on the Crimean Peninsula, in the south of Ukraine, but wounded British troops were shipped across the Black Sea to hospitals in Turkey. The sanitary conditions of these hospitals were awful, and many more people died from diseases than from wounds.

Big Data is more valuable when visualized and analyzed Data visualizations are everywhere and are more important than ever. From creating a visual representation of data points as part of an executive presentation, to showcasing progress, or even visualizing concepts for customer segments, data visualizations are a critical and valuable tool in many different situations. When it comes to big data, weak tools with basic features don’t cut it.
The CL3VER platformCL3VER works perfectly with Google Chrome. It is not a modeling software like SkecthUp, SolidWorks, Autodesk 3dsMax, etc. but it’s a presentation tool. Stepping beyond familiar visualizations like bar charts and pie charts, there are many approaches to visualizing data, from mapping (e.g., color coding a map to show voting patterns) to visualizing networks (e.g., the links between people).

There are plenty of cool technologies available to collect and examine data. Both web and desktop applications have provided some really great interfaces to fall in love with data mining, and with the rise in popularity we have noticed an increased number of infographics created over the past few years. Today we’ll be looking into some really cool and popular online resources for data visualization. You can see all kinds of data like human population, world condition and even human emotion presented via the visualization. While some of the visualization might be experimental, all of them have one similarity: they help you understand the data better, and this is exactly what visualization is for.

Visualizing a Titan Graph Database Build powerful and sophisticated visualizationapplications for your Titan graph database Visualizing Titan Databases with KeyLines KeyLines is a fully-featured Software Development Kit for building graph visualization software. It’s flexible enough to be compatible with any graph database, but is an especially good fit with Titan. Titan is an open source distributed graph database, available under a subscription license terms from the Aurelius team, lead by Marko Rodriguez.
Using distributed multi-machine clusters, Titan can store and efficiently traverse huge graphs containing billions of nodes and links. In addition, a flexible event model means KeyLines essentially become a visual query engine, allowing users to dynamically query the database in a visual way. It's often said that data is the new world currency, and the web is the exchange bureau through which it's traded. As consumers, we're positively swimming in data; it's everywhere from labels on food packaging design to World Health Organisation reports. As a result, for the designer it's becoming increasingly difficult to present data in a way that stands out from the mass of competing data streams. Get Adobe Creative Cloud One of the best ways to get your message across is to use a visualization to quickly draw attention to the key messages, and by presenting data visually it's also possible to uncover surprising patterns and observations that wouldn't be apparent from looking at stats alone.
