A Transumer Manifesto. Imagine winning $10,000 a year for life. It doesn’t seem like much, but over 25 years, you realize that it’s a quarter-million dollars. Then you sit down and calculate the compound interest. At a conservative 3% per year, you’re looking at about $375,000. Not bad for free money. That’s roughly the calculation I did a few years ago when I sold my car and switched to public transportation and car sharing.

I’m no saint, and admit to a bit of a gadget fetish. And increasingly, I’m not alone. Transumerism taking off You need not look far to find examples of this trend. And while the trend seems to have taken off with transportation (likely due to a combination of high transportation cost and intermittent need), it’s by no means confined there. And I haven’t even yet mentioned computers yet. Indeed, I believe one of the biggest drivers of the transumerist trend is computer technology. But computer technology isn’t the only factor. And that’s just scratching the surface. Collaborative Consumption. = when a community gets together “through organized sharing, swapping, bartering, trading, gifting and renting to get the same pleasures of ownership with reduced personal cost and burden, and lower environmental impact [1] URL = Wikipedia From the Wikipedia: "The term collaborative consumption is used to describe the cultural and economic force away from 'hyper-consumption' to re-invented economic models of sharing, swapping, bartering, trading or renting that have been enabled by advances in social media and peer-to-peer online platforms.

" ( Tomasz Tunguz: "Collaborative consumption market places are everywhere: media, car rental, lodging, staffing, textbooks, apparel, custom graphic design and even finance. Netflix shares DVDs among a large subscriber base. But these models also have the capacity to increase demand and the total market size by addressing new previously unaddressable segments. SAPORE DEI MOBILI (Furniture tasting) by Ryosuke Fukusada and Rui Pereira This project was born as a reflection about the velocity of the contemporary furniture industry and how the consumers are unable to digest the huge amount of new products launched every year. For this Salone we propose an alternative way of experiencing furniture.

We present furniture pan, an object that mixes both traditional Japanese small cakes 'baby castella' with a Portuguese egg based pastry called 'ovos moles'. Using the same molding technique we created a new typology of object and at the same time a new tradition... Playing with food is now allowed. Enjoy your furniture! Why Good Enough Is Better: Lessons In Simplicity From Emerging Markets. We began exploring the concept of “good enough” in product and service development while conducting field research on grassroots entrepreneurs and innovative enterprises in emerging markets like India a few years ago. We found that innovators in these markets use a unique approach to innovation that starts by upending assumptions and asking fundamental, rather than incremental "what if" questions when developing a new product, service, or business model.

Asking these fundamental questions, we learned, often leads to simple and focused design of a “good enough” solution--an affordable product or service that effectively meets the basic needs of hundreds of thousands of customers in emerging markets. Many of these resourceful innovators use jugaad, a Hindi word that roughly translates as "an improvised solution borne from ingenuity that addresses a pressing socio-economic problem. " In developed economies, the “bigger is better” approach to innovation has dominated for years. Links. Great Businesses Don't Start With a Plan - Anthony Tjan. By Anthony K. Tjan | 11:29 AM May 16, 2012 You want to start a business. So you need a plan, right? No. Not really. As part of the research for a book I’m co-authoring — Heart, Smarts, Guts, and Luck, due out in August from HBR Press — my colleagues and I interviewed and surveyed hundreds of successful entrepreneurs around the globe to better understand what it takes to be an entrepreneur and build a really great business.

One of our most striking findings was that of the entrepreneurs we surveyed who had a successful exit (that is, an IPO or sale to another firm), about 70% did NOT start with a business plan. Instead, their business journeys originated in a different place, a place we call the Heart. It’s not that all planning is bad. At a business’s inception, resources are limited, and the best content for a business plan is real-world data based on testing aspects of the concept.

It’s not just start-ups. So don’t worry too much about a business plan. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. For the past two years I’ve heard loud and clear (direct from Conjunctured members) why coworking is the way to go for them. We’ve been open for a little more than two years now and I’ve spoken with just about everyone that has walked in the front door. Members, visitors, and I have discussed all kinds of things. Specific to coworking, we’ve talked about what they’re looking for in an office, complaints about their previous setup, their experience working from home, the positives of being in a coworking environment, the negatives of being in a normal office, etc. I decided I would share some of these things I’ve learned in a top list of sorts for coworking. I tried to make it general and not super specific to how Conjunctured does coworking.

So, without further adieu…14 Reasons Why Joining a Coworking Space Beats Renting Your Own Private Office Space No lease! I hope this list was helpful to you! Old jars and containers can be repurposed for other uses, which is what “Going Green” is all about. As an antique dealer and collector, as well as a business owner, I am always looking for new ways to reinvent my business, my brand and my product line. Right now, I see the need to make my inventory attractive to the Twentysomething consumer. Many baby boomers are downsizing and, while they are still spending money on antiques and collectibles, we need to cultivate a younger generation of shoppers.

So, how do you go about making your antique store front or website attractive to the young consumer? First, you must have an online presence. Young people have grown-up with computers and the Internet and now, with smart phone technology, iPads, etc., they are accessing the Internet from places other than they home computer and they are using it to shop!

Lesley Pennington is first and foremost a mom, an entrepreneur, and a design enthusiast.

A long time ago she studied Fine Art and Art History at the University of Toronto, and then worked as a graphic designer for a few years until she realised that she was never going to be a great designer. So she quit and started a business providing computer training to the design industry. It turned out to be a highly stimulating entrepreneurial experience that led to a very entrepreneurial job offer – from Apple Computer in Silicon Valley. Lesley packed her suitcases and moved from Canada to California. Lesley loved Apple, and California, but life has a way of throwing you curveballs. And then she bought the infamous IKEA sofa for her summer house: ”It was relatively simple to find a sofa that could fit into the casual living space at our summer house, but not as easy to find the right colour and the right fabric for the sofa in order to achieve exactly the look that I wanted.

10 Innovative Materials To Look Out For In 2012. The development of new materials that have increased performance and functionality has become a major driver of innovation in recent years. According to the Industrial Technologies arm of the Research and Innovation department of the European Commission, it is estimated that 70% of all new product innovation is based on materials with new or improved properties. These emergent materials and their associated technologies are changing the way that architects and designers work and the way that we as consumers are engaging with the buildings and products that surround us.

Dr Sascha Peters is an innovation consultant and materials specialist from Germany. Peters is CEO of Haute Innovation, a company that focuses on shorting innovation processes and providing material-technical innovations for faster conversion into marketable products. Freshome caught up with Dr. These high-strength hollow spheres offer an option for flexibly filling non-rigid geometrical shapes. Mesh - the pulse of the sharing economy. Ready or Not? - Simplify Life. If you could have a better week, month, year for a $200 investment, would you do it? Your home is your grounding point, the foundation from which all flows. Does it feel good? Is it beautiful? Peaceful? Does it reflect the condition of your life? Does it reflect the part of you that you want to share with others?

Or maybe you want to present something different... Perhaps your home reveals your crowded schedule, numerous commitments, the lack of time or focus you have available to put everything in order. Do you want to wake up in a room you love? Do you smile when you walk room to room, or do you groan and wish things were different? You can love your space. It CAN be an environment that restores, motivates, inspires you to be all you can be, to tackle your day. When you hire us to make the turn around you desire- all things become possible.

We know we feel better when there are systems of order. To Increase Sustainable Consumption, Show People What’s In It For Them. This year at the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos, the concept of sustainable consumption took center stage. In partnership with Accenture, the WEF just released its report, "More With Less," which accurately pinpoints the systemic triggers, barriers and urgent need for action inherent in this necessary transition. At face value, sustainable consumption seems counterintuitive to growth, but the report identifies the extraordinary competitive and economic opportunities for businesses, whether catalyzed by resource scarcity, population growth, the burgeoning middle class, or changing consumer values. An area where there is still work to do, however, is the "how. " Namely, how to better define and ingrain the value proposition sustainable consumption brings to consumers, and spur broader systemic change and adoption.

Changing consumer behavior is one of the single, largest opportunities to answer the question of "how," and to make a positive environmental (and economic) impact. Can't get no satisfaction: Why service companies can't keep their promises. Service companies can’t show customers a tangible product. Since services are intangible, the only way to sell them is by making a promise to perform. But most service companies fail to keep their promises, leaving customers frustrated, confused and abused. Why do so many service companies fail to keep their promises to customers? Customers have become accustomed to being abused by the companies they buy services from. Customer expectations for most services are low, low, low. Fewer than 1 in 10 customers say companies are exceeding their service expectations.

The most hated companies, and the most hated industries, are service providers: Consider your last experience with your telephone, cable or satellite provider; your utility provider; your airline; or your bank. The customer support decision tree. When customers are dissatisfied, there are only two possible outcomes. If you’re lucky and they do call you, there are still two possible outcomes.

A production line requires efficiency. The Last Viridian Note. By Bruce Sterling Recent events have clearly established that the character of the times has changed. The Viridian Design Movement was founded in distant 1999. After the years transpiring – various disasters, wars, financial collapses and a major change in political tone – the world has become a different place.

It remains only to close the Viridian episode gracefully, and to conclude with a few meditative suggestions. As I explained in the first Viridian speech, any design movement – social movements of any kind, really – should be designed with an explicit expiration date. The year 2012 would have been the extreme to which Viridian could have persisted. Some Viridian principles can be lightly re-phrased, buffed-up and likely made of practical use in days to come. I'm following current events with keen interest. I would like to cordially thank Viridian readers and contributors and advisors for their patience and their generous help over nine years.
