Universities co-creating urban sustainability - OurWorld 2.0

Until now, higher education institutions have tended to focus on sustainability within their own borders. This has predominantly been via sustainability education, research and designing green or carbon neutral campuses. Yet borders between society and academia are dissolving. Many high-profile universities across the world are reaching out past campus boundaries to form ambitious partnerships with industry, government and civil society organisations.

In this role of ‘co-creation’, a university attempts to materialise sustainable development by working with society, to create society. Public Design Festival. Human Cities: Festivals. Small Scale, Big Change. Internet-based architecture communities such as the The 1%, urbaninform, and Open Architecture Network are forums for the dissemination and development of knowledge, expertise, and innovation among architects and other contributors. Open-source sharing—wherein concepts, proposals, and sometimes architectural plans and drawings (for built and unbuilt structures) are made freely available—is a common feature of these networks and a catalyst for the actualization of projects or the recycling or improvement of ideas. This in turn enables architects to respond efficiently to the needs of underserved communities.

Barcelona: Actar 2006 The understanding of Yona Friedman‘s work can be said to be disturbed by its popularity. His Ville Spatiale, just like Constant’s New Babylon, suffers from its architectural formalization that is immediately categorized as a 60′s megastructure that simply allows a second level to the existing city. An experimental interdisciplinary workspace at the Royal College of Art. Department 21 is a project where designers, artists and architects can meet, collaborate and share working space beyond the institutional boundaries of their own disciplines.

An experimental interdisciplinary workspace at the Royal College of Art

Department 21 was set up in 2009 when a group of students at the Royal College of Art, London initiated an experimental cross-departmental studio space, thereby engendering new discussions and ways of working than had been seen in recent years at the college. Emerging from an institutional context in which individual authorship and outcome-driven projects are the dominant frames for creative production, the project is the result of a need for new, collaborative forms of exchange between students from different disciplines: it is a means to get in touch with other peoples’ practices (and in this way question one’s own practice), as well as being a platform to support collaboration beyond specialties. METHODOLOGY One of the key values of the project is the incidental. Text written by Department 21 & Pippa Koszerek. La struttura della ricerca.

Locality home page « Locality. The Place Station. What we are all about The Place Station The Place Station introduces public and private sector owners of land and buildings across the UK to social and community entrepreneurs with ideas for transforming their local area.

The Place Station

The Community Right to Bid is now in force, introduced in the Localism Act 2011, it places a new duty upon local authorities in England and Wales to “maintain a list of land in its area that is land of community value”, as nominated by the local community. If any land or buildings on this list then comes up for sale, the local community will be given six months to prepare a bid to buy the land. This new Community Right gives local communities more time to help them buy key assets that are for sale on the open market, promoting community empowerment and enabling big society solutions to flourish.
