9 Excellent Tools for Design Mockups
So you've just taken some killer photos with your new DSLR , or you captured a great video with your iPhone — what's next? While it feels natural to just post media quickly to your Facebook Page, sometimes great photos or video need their own home in the form of a personal website. But on the other hand, it's not easy to make a website layout that complements rich media. In order to make a great website, professional web designers take advantage of mockup tools to analyze layout, design and functionality. It's a real mixed bag this month. IDEs, prototyping tools, visual effects, slide shows … there doesn't seem to be any obvious connection. But the tendency for tools to incorporate some degree of playing-field levelling remains evident. For example, a mobile framework that enables you to 'code once' – and in JavaScript, no less. Prototyping tools with components for multiple platforms, IDEs that facilitate rather than getting in the way of fluid development. An important goal for each of these projects is to iron out some of the web's wrinkles so you can focus on solving real problems not re-inventing the wheel. In February we've stumbled upon, been emailed and had submitted a variety of tools for making the web dev's job a little easier. Not the massive JCB-type apps but the kind of delicate little tools which might fit into a calf-skin wallet and kept in a breast pocket, ready for use. JavaScript leads the charge, providing the polly filler which is currently holding the web together. Bridging those annoying little gaps in production and keeping end users from suspecting there might be any difference between Internet Explorer and Safari. There were more ambitious apps out there but ambition isn't always a guarantee of quality. And, interestingly, a couple of these entries are free while not being open source.
