Apr 12, 2012 The collapse of the stage superstructure at the Indiana State Fair last August just prior to a Sugarland concert killed seven and injured dozens. As reported by the Indianapolis Star and others, the two reports commissioned by the state on the tragedy were released today.

What to Do ? (1) Politics and Knowledge: A few months ago a Republican candidate for State Office came to my office to talk about climate change. At the end of the hour he asked me how I thought we could advance beyond the current political state which is publicly characterized by, my word, tribalism – do you or do you not believe in climate change?

As readers are aware, this blog has been inactive for some time, so I figure I should formally put it into retirement. I will not be posting here anymore, but will leave up my old posts, and may check back to moderate comments once in a great while. I am continuing to blog. You can check out the Times Union Weather and Climate blog, where I will continue to talk about some general climate issues, although at a laymen´s level. Echoing throughout the above video is one striking point. When it comes to climate change, the clock is ticking and the international community needs to listen. "When I look ahead at Rio and beyond, it seems to me that our scarcest resource is time", says Lester Brown, president at the Earth Policy Institute. "What we're actually looking at is a race between tipping points, between natural, environmental tipping points on the one hand and political tipping points on the other."

The controversial record of climate change, put together by the Met Office Hadley Centre and the University of East Anglia, is one of only a handful of global temperature data sets stretching back since the end of the 19th century. The temperature series was at the centre of the Climategate scandal in 2009, after hacked emails from the University of East Anglia showed scientist were unwilling to release original data.

Common Baseline In this previous post , I showed how to convert temperature anomaly time series from one baseline period to another period. I then used this technique in this post to directly compare UAH 5.4 (baseline 1981-2010) and GISS. Since the UAH TLT 5.4 series is based on a 1981-2010 baseline, the offset is nearly zero (-0.00098 versus 0.0). The RSS offset changes the baseline from 1979-1998 to 1981-2010. Continue reading

The Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University The proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which could carry a diluted form of tar sands from Canada to Texas, has attracted the ire of many environmentalists , including Bill McKibben, who spearheaded protests in front of the White House last month. This week, McKibben argued the Obama administration is practicing “crony capitalism” and that e-mails obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request imply the State Department—charged with evaluating the pipeline—may have worked closely with TransCanada , the company building the pipeline, to help the plan win approval.
