Sheringham - Otterndorf Twinning Association A little more information about the twinning history Otterndorf is situated on the mouth of the River Elbe about 65 miles from Hamburg. It is a delightful 600 year old town with almost the same population as Sheringham. A lot of research was done before the two towns were officially linked together. It was while Hans Joachim Wohlleben (Teacher & Town Councillor) was studying in Norwich that he was tasked with finding a suitable town for Otterndorf to form a Twinning Partnership with.

Sheringham Town Council called a series of public meetings and at the last of them on 9 th March 1987 the Sheringham- Otterndorf Twinning Association was formed. The Twinning Agreement was formally signed by representatives of both towns at official ceremonies, first in Otterndorf on 25th October 1987 and then in Sheringham on 14th April 1988.

From the outset, the Association has benefited from the enthusiastic support of its membership and from the local community. Sailing ships were completely at the mercy of the elements; despite skilled seamanship they could be calmed for days or battered to pieces on rocks and sandbanks. Those who serve as lifeboatmen often come from families with a history of lifeboat service. Lifeboatmen often turn out in treacherous conditions to rescue complete strangers, not knowing if they will return to their own loved ones.

St Joseph, Sheringham Catholicism survived in Norfolk, just; often supported by the network of recusant landed gentry, it re-emerged as a missionary force in the 18th century, to be finally decriminalised by a succession of reform acts between 1780 and 1836.

Between these two dates, several Catholic churches were built in East Anglia which survive to this day, but it was only after 1836 that Catholicism was able to develop in earnest, and the re-establishment of the Catholic hierarchy in 1850 led to renewed confidence, and a nationwide pattern of parishes. Even so, Catholicism returned late to the coast of north Norfolk. I am completely indebted to Canon Edward MacBride's marvellous history book The Catholic Church in Sheringham for the background of what happened. The story of Sheringham Catholic church gathered strength in 1909 with the donation of more than £3,000 to purchase the land around the chapel and build a large church.

And so it is. Primitive Methodism | The History of Sheringham Primitive Methodists. Norfolk Myth - Yow Yows of Sheringham and Where to Stay in Sheringham. It would be very remarkable if a town like Sheringham, with its long history of fisherman, smugglers and drowning, did not have its fair share of ghost stories. One such story we heard is that of the Yow-Yows: Just beyond the cliffs, a long time ago, so the locals say, a captain of an old ship drowned. The fishermen of Lower Sheringham could have saved him, but made no effort to do so, perhaps because if he did not survive they could salvage his cargo!. As the captain’s lungs began to fill with water he cursed the fishermen of Lower Sheringham.

Now the fishermen of today say that on calm days they sometimes hear voices calling for help, whilst they are out in their boats. Assuming that it is someone in distress, they go to investigate unlike their ancestors. When they reach the spot where they thought the voice had been coming from, it suddenly ceases, and starts up in another direction entirely! Sheringham Fishermen's Ganseys. History With a long history in Sheringham, the current location of the Crown Inn is documented to be it’s second site after a vicious storm claimed the first building in the 1930′s. Sheringham. The town of Sheringham is on the north Norfolk coast, with houses and shops down to the edge of the sea. But the ancient town of Sheringham, today known as Upper Sheringham, is the settlement listed in the Domesday book of 1086.

The town was then know variously as Silingham, Siringham or Schyringham. As with many of Norfolk's town and villages, the name is of Scandinavian origin, meaning the 'home of Scira's people.' Until the 17th century, Beeston was the primary settlement, being the location of the Augustinian Priory, founded in 1197. In medieval times the men of Upper Sheringham, or rather 'Upper Town', made their way to the hythe on the coast to launch their fishing boats.

By the second half of the 19th century the town of Sheringham boasted nearly 150 boats working from the town. The coming of the railways from the Midlands in 1887, followed by the linking up with London via the Great Eastern railway in 1906 greatly increased the number of visitors to the town. Sheringham Savoyards. Sheringham Little Theatre in the 80s The Sheringham Savoyards, formed in 1979 to present (mostly) shows by Gilbert & Sullivan on stage in Sheringham's Little Theatre and occasionally elsewhere in Norfolk, came into being when it was realised that much local musical - mostly vocal - talent was available and not being used.

A recent Act of Parliament had revised the structure and organisation of local government in England and Wales - the old Urban and Rural Districts were abolished in favour of new Districts under (in some cases) new Counties. In Sheringham one result was that the Little Theatre, long run by the U.D.C. on an annual basis rented from the owners, Norfolk County Council, was now back with the County under direct control. Quite early in the proceedings a Music Sub-Committee was formed with Mrs Monica Jacobs of Kelling as its active and innovative secretary, with her husband Bill and other leading lights in the musical and dramatic world giving active support. The once quiet High Street became a bustling centre, as new shops and businesses were set up to cater for the needs of the changing population. By Norfolk standards St Peter’s is a very recent creation. It was as a result of their efforts that in 1842 a Chapel of Ease was built, which a few years later was enlarged to allow the seating of about 500 people.

The building cost £8000 and could supposedly seat more than 700. The two pictures of the church are taken from the original architectural drawings.
