This book provided a fascinating looking into the history of social media. We might think social media is relatively new from the creation of the world wide web and websites like Myspace, Facebook, and Twitter. But Standage illustrates that social media is much, much older than we think. Since we are social creatures by nature, we can document the earliest forms of social media in clay tablets, public forums, and letters. We may no longer use clay tablets to write jokes to our friends, or break out the "old" pen and paper to comment on the latest politics, but this brief but thorough history lesson shows us that information sharing and storage has continually changed throughout history.

To me this class was about a couple big themes – first show up. In this case I mean be present. It is far easier to hide behind an office door than it is to work the circulation desk with the library staff. It is far easier to hide behind the numbers than to hold a class in how the library operates. The second big theme is embrace technology and change. The effort to bring the local library closer to the patients in the local hospital was a dismal failure. If I had had this class before that one, perhaps it would have had a different outcome.
