It was inspired by The Secret Life of Plants, a 1973 book that combined science with New Age techniques to argue that plants could "hear" sound—and that, theoretically, one could make music for them just as music is made for human beings. Over the next twelve years, Coffin compiled two volumes of "plant" music, enlisting artists like Sonic Youth, Ariel Pink, Animal Collective's Deakin and Geologist, Jim O'Rourke, Yoko Ono, Alice Coltrane, Black Dice, Nico Muhly, Boredoms' EYE, and Laurie Anderson to try their hand at composition. You can listen to the first two volumes below. A third volume is in the works that will feature artists such as Kelela, Arto Lindsay, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Teengirl Fantasy, Bernie Worrell, Martin Rev of Suicide, Charlemagne Palestine, and more. The artists have been recording at Red Bull Studios in New York City, where Coffin is currently exhibiting his Living installation.

HEARING AID. A lot of excitement has been building up about Under Canvas this year and it’s easy to see why.

HEARING AID

After the success of last year’s event which featured artists such as Fort Romeau and Eliphino, the Under Canvas team have been working to bring us another night of fantastic music. With a mix of big name DJs and up and coming artists from different (but all very danceable) genres, it promises to be one of the best events of the year. With four days to go, Hearing Aid spoke to Under Canvas heads Will Land and Val Voshchevska to find out more. For those of our readers who haven’t attended Under Canvas before can you tell us a bit about the event and what to expect on the day?

Will: Under Canvas is the only event of its kind in St Andrews - the emphasis is on bringing great music and a festival-inspired atmosphere to the town, a kind of fun frenetic energy brought to St Mary’s Quad. Autre Ne Veut - Counting by i-D online. Tokyo Police Club: Champ. In Internet years, Tokyo Police Club are just about ready for retirement.

Tokyo Police Club: Champ

As a group of underage buddies from the Toronto suburbs, their antsy take on post-Strokes rock was an easy upload for music blogs upon the 2006 release of their snappy A Lesson in Crime EP. Back then, their chances of living beyond the next Hype Machine cycle was anyone's guess, and any notions of longevity seemed moot for a band that preferred to wrap things up around the two-minute mark. But as other 2006 indie upstarts like Annuals, Be Your Own Pet, and Voxtrot have blown up or faded away, Tokyo Police Club endure. This is not a coincidence. For a band that originally got great mileage out of their bubbling exuberance, TPC's 2008 LP bow Elephant Shell was a relatively stately surprise. Collective Concerts. The Ultimate Road Trip Playlist - 50 Best Road Trip Songs&

So we’ve compiled a list of the 50 best road trip songs . In order to make this be-all end-all totally definitive list that all other lists look up to, the songs had to meet the following criteria: a.) encompass the excitement and freedom of road tripping b.) make the time pass faster c.) keep you awake without the assistance of questionably legal pills named “No Doze” d.) contain lyrics so singable that you’ll legitimately consider trying out for the next “American Idol” e.) keep you distracted long enough to make you forget you need to pee (which subsequently means stopping at a heinous rest stop where the bathroom stalls are tagged with death threats and truckers hit on you) f.) drown out the sound of your annoying friend who complains about a developing deep vein thrombosis from being crammed in the backseat (tough it up!)
