The Ultimate Strawberry Lemonade

I can cook for myself! – was when I first learned to make lemonade. I magically found the refrigerated lemon juice at our house and followed the directions to make my own lemonade. I stirred and stirred and stirred again until that sugar was finally dissolved. Speaking of which, what gives sugar?! Sorry for the detour. Anyway, there was a summer there where I made my own lemonade every single day, making sure to rub it in my sister’s face that I knew how to and she didn’t. The key to this being the ultimate lemonade is that you blend it up with the lemon rind in there.

And any time of day for that matter. (makes 2 pint-glass servings with ice) 3/4 cup sugar2 large lemons, microwaved for 30 seconds2 cups water1 cup of frozen strawberries, microwaved for 1 minute (you could use fresh, but I think the frozen works better here) In a blender squeeze the lemons and add the rest of the lemon, rind and all. Simple and delicious. This recipe is laced with cinnamon and topped with fresh blueberries. Awesome! When I was stuck in airports a few weeks ago, I ended up buying more than my share of magazines. One of them, O magazine, had a whole article about blueberries and tasty recipes to make with them. This weekend I picked up a pint of blueberries at the market eager to get started on my unconventional focaccia recipe. When I pulled the bread out of the oven it was a beautiful sight. Blueberry Focaccia from O magazine I cut my recipe in half and it worked out well. 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast 2 1/4 cups warm water 6 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup light brown sugar 1 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 large egg 6 Tbsp. unsalted butter, room temperature Vegetable oil, for greasing 2 pints (5 to 6 cups) blueberries1 In a small bowl, mix yeast and water; set aside until foamy, about 5 minutes.

I’ve been wanting to try some homemade chocolate syrup. The basic recipe is very simple, but there are a few variations of it, so the other day I decided to experiment with them and have a chocolate syrup taste test. Not a shabby way to spend the afternoon! The one I liked the best was from Amy Dacyczyn’s The Complete Tightwad Gazette. ½ cup cocoa powder 1 cup water 2 cups sugar ⅛ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon vanilla Mix the cocoa powder and the water in a saucepan. The result is very rich, so I only use a teaspoon for a glass of chocolate milk. I poured the chocolate into a flip-top glass bottle and added a label.
