It's Not All About You: What Privacy Advocates Don't Get About Data Tracking on the Web - Alexander Furnas - Technology

Jonathan Zittrain noted last summer, "If what you are getting online is for free, you are not the customer, you are the product. " This is just a fact: The Internet of free platforms, free services and free content is wholly subsidized by targeted advertising, the efficacy (and thus profitability) of which relies on collecting and mining user data. We experience this commodification of our attention everyday in virtually everything we do online, whether it's searching, checking email, using Facebook or reading The Atlantic Technology section on this site.

That is to say, right now you are a product. Most of us, myself included, have not come to terms with what it means to "be the product. " For many people the data-for-free-stuff deal is a bargain worth making. The persuasive power of these technologies is not overt. A few things are certain, however.

It was great for web developers whether or not they had experience with SEO because there is inevitably something that you end up Googling if you don't use it on a daily basis. After spending a little time with Danny's cheatsheet, I realized that I wanted something interactive so that I could play with the different snippets it offered. So, I decided to build an interactive cheatsheet that lets you enter in the values for the page title, keyword, URLs for links, etc. and would automatically populate the relevant tags for your HTML document. The finished product is the Web Developer's Interactive Cheatsheet for SEO and the Open Graph. (Finished may be too strong of a word because there is more that I'd like to do with it. :-) ). So, the way it works is this: you specify the desired values in the form at the top of the page. Here is an example of the HTML tags that are generated: What Every Programmer Should Know About SEO.

Over the last few years since I started paying attention to SEO I have noticed many “developer guides to SEO”.

What Every Programmer Should Know About SEO

Largely, these guides are written by developers and not SEO experts. At this point, I am neither of those, but since I spent the last few years working for an SEO tools company, I managed to garner quite a bit of knowledge on the topic. Of course, the things I love about SEO, are the things I love about search – big data, fast performance, and interesting algorithms.

Below I have compiled the minimum of amount of SEO knowledge a developer should have to properly optimize a website for search engine discovery. I largely wrote this for my team and couple of other people who have asked, but hopefully you will find it useful. Oh and special thanks on this post goes to Bryce Howard – I am very lucky to have someone so brilliant to help me edit. In order to understand SEO, I think it helps to start with the basics: How do search engines work? So what happens? The Basics Freshness!
