Google Street View goes indoors with airports and train stations | Technology. Google Street View has been about more than streets for some time now: in recent months, the internet giant has added US national parks, ski resorts, Venice's canals and the Galapagos Islands to its database. Now the company is turning its attention to some indoor locations, although they're not quite as picturesque. Google has added 16 international airports and 59 train and subway stations to Street View, including a number of British locations.
They include Gatwick Airport and train stations in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds, as well as a (nearly) full set of London mainline stations: Paddington, Victoria, King's Cross, St. Pancras, Charing Cross, Waterloo, London Bridge, Cannon Street, Fenchurch Street and Liverpool Street. Google is pitching the new additions as a feature for tourists. "Our first efforts to map global transit locations include 16 international airports, over 50 train and subway stations, and even a cable car station in Hong Kong. " Street View transit locations. Google Maps becoming more context-aware and 'emotional' SAN FRANCISCO -- For Google, the map of the future is taking everything it knows about you and the world and plotting it in real-time as you move through your life. "We can build a whole new map for every context and every person," said Bernhard Seefeld, product management director for Google Maps, speaking at the GigaOm Roadmap 2013 conference.
"It's a specific map nobody has seen before, and it's just there for that moment to visualize the data. " Like the early days of map making that told stories of discovery and created more of an emotional connection with the unfolding world, Google wants to build what Seefeld called "emotional maps that reflect our real life connections and peek into the future and possibly travel there. " Google's context-aware maps will require refining and extending the underlying map data, and combining it with the kind of personal data from applications that powers Google Now, the company's personal digital assistant technology. Meet the Future of Google Maps. Offline mapping for Android phones, Street View for nature trails and 3D Google Earth maps are all improvements coming to Google Maps in the near future. The three new features were unveiled by company executives at a press event at the company's San Francisco offices.
Offline mapping will become a part of Google's "own global base map" and offer hi-res navigation without needing a WiFI or 3G or 4G connection. To use the feature, users will have to select the area they plan to visit before going offline, then download the map to their device. The familiar GPS tracking blue dot will still be there to help with navigation. Street View for walkable locations will take the popular feature beyond the streets, railroads and rivers that have already been covered. It's possible because the Street View cameras have gotten smaller, and now come in the form of a wearable backpack weighing about 40 pounds. A demo of the 3D flyover effect was fairly mesmerizing.
Google Maps For Android Gets Google Offers, Business Photos & Indoor Walking Directions. Google just launched an update for Google Maps for Android that brings three interesting new features to the app: integration with Google Offers, support for Google Business Photos and indoor walking directions. With the new Google Offers integration, Android users will now be able to see which nearby stores currently offer deals.
This, says Google, includes both offers that can be purchased, as well as “free” offers that are available immediately. Users can also opt-in to receive notifications when there are offers near them. Google, it is worth noting, also offers a dedicated Google Offers app for Android as well. The Google Maps for Android app now also lets users in the U.S. and Japan (the two countries where venue owners can already upload their own indoor maps) get indoor walking directions. The app now also features support for Google Business Photos (a.k.a.
