The NATO phonetic alphabet , more accurately known as the NATO spelling alphabet and also called the ICAO phonetic or spelling alphabet , the ITU phonetic alphabet , and the international radiotelephony spelling alphabet , is the most widely used spelling alphabet . Though often called "phonetic alphabets", spelling alphabets are not in fact phonetic in the sense that linguists use the term, and they do not have any association with phonetic transcription systems like the International Phonetic Alphabet .
