So first I'd like to properly describe the problem: Every time the galaxy was rebooted, the phone was unresponsive for many hours in a row. Using an android app called process monitor, I have established that the process that was occupying CPU was named, /system/bin/sdcard . After reading some Android development documentation I came to a conclusion that the process itself is not to blame: /system/bin/sdcard is a process spanned by SD card access service, and the real culprit could be any application accessing the SD card.

My gut feeling told me that it is somehow related to the notorious media scanner. So I went to Settings>Applications>Running applications, and stopped application called Media. So I found the "what" now I needed to figure "why". In order to empirically detect which directory was problematic I have used "Storage analyser". Mediaserver or Media scanner on Android is designed to scan and index every media file: Images, Videos, Music and make the list available to all Android apps, so that they don’t have to do the repetitive tasks. But it isn’t perfect. Media server can have strange behaviors and tends to be buggy. Very often you can end-up shedding 50% of your battery on Media scans. Not only does media scanner go wrong on custom ROMs but many of the official stock ROMs too. How to Fix Mediaserver / scanner Battery drain One quick way to get around is to stop Media scanner service altogether (using apps on Play store) but that way your songs, photos, videos would vanish from your gallery, music player.

The situation is more frequent once your sdcard (internal or external) gets old and you’ve lots of files. I had been digging out how to fix it, and here are my solutions. CWM/TWRP Recovery. Warning: For GT-i9100 and SGH-i777, installing CWM or TWRP recovery also installs kernel.

This is only recommended to install when installing a new custom ROM. Installing CWM/TWRP recovery will most likely break the ROM you are running currently as it overwrites the ROM’s kernel.
