UBS appoints Darren Rabenou as head of ESG investment strategies - UBS Asset Management has appointed Darren Rabenou as its head of food & agriculture and head of ESG investment strategies.
In the role of head of food & agriculture, Rabenou will be heading new initiatives to help meet growing investor interest in agriculture. This will also include UBS AM’s Farmland strategy, which has $2bn in assets, being integrated into the wider food and agriculture offering. As head of ESG investment strategies, Rabenou will also cover real estate, infrastructure, private equity and agriculture. He will be based in New York and report to Joe Azelby, head of real estate and private markets at UBS Asset Management. UBS AM said the change in roles reflected increased client demand in this area, which was also the reason behind naming Rabenou as head of ESG investment strategies for REPM.
Rabenou has more than 30 years of investment experience, which includes most recently working as a managing partner at DTR Partners in New York. Google Maps to direct drivers with eco-friendly routes - The Maps app by Google will start directing drivers along routes estimated to generate the lowest carbon emissions based on traffic, slopes and other factors, the company announced.
Google, an Alphabet Inc unit, said the feature would launch later this year in the U.S. and eventually reach other countries as part of its commitment to help combat climate change through its services. Unless users opt out, the default route will be the “eco-friendly” one if comparable options take about the same time, Google said. Netflix has launched a plan called Net Zero + Nature under which it has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2022, and every year thereafter.
In a blog post, Netflix Sustainability Officer Emma Stewart said that the company will start first by reducing our internal emissions, aligning with the Paris Agreement’s goal to limit global warming to 1.5°C. “We will also reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 45% by 2030, based on the Science-Based Targets Initiative Guidance.” By the end of 2021, Netflix plans to neutralise Scope 3 emissions which can’t be avoided internally by investing in projects that prevent carbon from entering the atmosphere.
Airlines for America deepen climate change commitment; aim to be net-zero by 2050 - Airlines for America (A4A), the industry trade organization that advocates on behalf of the leading US airlines, has announced the commitment of its member carriers to work across the aviation industry and with government leaders in a positive partnership to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
As part of the commitment, A4A carriers pledged to work with the government and other stakeholders toward a rapid expansion of the production and deployment of commercially viable sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to make 2 billion gallons of SAF available to U.S. aircraft operators in 2030. “We are proud of our record on climate change. But we know the climate change challenge our country and the world face has only continued to intensify,” said A4A President and CEO Nicholas E. Nexcharge, a joint venture between Exide Industries and Switzerland-based Leclanche, inaugurated the country’s first grid-connected lithium-ion battery-based community energy storage system in Delhi in collaboration with Tata Power Delhi Distribution (TPDDL).
The 0.52 MWh battery energy storage system at TPDDL’s Rani Bagh substation will provide peak shaving and deviation settlement mechanism based on frequency response at the substation level with power backup to preferential consumers in case of a grid outage. Road to wider adoption of grid-scale energy storage The grid-connected system, owned by Exide Industries and Leclanche SA, will provide the path for wider adoption of grid-scale energy storage technology across India.

Climate change: Pak calls for inclusive policies - Neighbouring country Pakistan, with the aim of mitigating climate change, has called for inclusive, cooperative and forward-looking policies. According to a statement released by the foreign ministry, the country is looking to counter the challenge of climate change in the world. Responding to media queries, spokesman of the Foreign Ministry Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said that Pakistan remains fully committed to playing its due role in the fight against climate change which is one of the defining challenges, reports Xinhua news agency. He said that Pakistan’s commitment to addressing climate change including landmark initiatives like the 10 Billion Tree Tsunami and Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s leadership on this account is well accepted and appreciated around the world.
