Action! « Consequentialart’s Sequential Art Class. When I first started teaching this class in person, the cumbersome title was “Sequential Storytelling: The Death of SuperManga.” This combative name was meant to be provocative. I wanted students to show up realizing I was not here to teach them a commercial art. They would not be learning how to inflate anatomy to fit in with current superheroic trends, nor would I teach these Americans the proper eyes to nose proportion to ape their favorite (anime-inspired) mangaka. I was here to teach a means of self-expression. To hammer that point home, in the first class I would always begin by tearing a cruddy popular superhero book to shreds. That usually got their attention. One guy clearly never recovered from my destruction of some Mark Pacella-penned issue of X-Force.

The forgotten Warren magazine... Thursday, November 25, 2010 The forgotten Warren magazine... While vamping young guys with Vampirella and creeping us out with Uncle Creepy, publisher Jim Warren also published three issues of TEEN LOVE STORIES, a magazine aimed at girls. The comic strips the magazine used were, quoting from THE WARREN COMPANION (2001), "comprise[d of] . . . reprints from British romance comics published by Fleetway. The long strips in each issue were re-sized reprintings of strips from either of their digest-sized Picture Library Titles: True Life Library or Love Story Library. " . . . Sellectiones Illustrada [sic]* provided most of the artwork for Fleetway's romance line, though these reprintings predate their formal publishing relationship with Warren by several years.

Jim Warren obtained the strips directly from Fleetway . . . "*Actually spelled Selecciones Ilustradas. This is TEEN LOVE STORIES #1, 1967.Copyright © 1967 Warren Publishing Co. Part 2 is just below. Captain Marvel and "The Monster Society of Evil" was a serialized story which ran in "Captain Marvel Adventures" beginning the the March 1943 issue #22. Serialization was a method used by magazine and newspaper publishers since the day they began to help insure readers would buy the next issue to see what happened. Charles Dickens and Mark Twain stories were originally published in serialized form which kept consumers on pins and needles waiting to see the continuing adventures of Pip or Tom Sawyer. When motion pictures began, they took notice and theater owners clamored for a serial to come to them, to bring patrons back week after week.

From Les Vampyres and Tom Mix in the silent days of the 1920's, right through the heyday of the western and adventure serials by Republic most notably, but also by a number of other studios to the 1950's when television took over. Television too took over the serial reigns with the daily soap opera which it had inherited from radio. Why not indeed. 1.)
