13 ways to create compelling characters

Make the character exceptional at something. Give your character a trait or skill that makes him or her admirable in some way. It doesn’t have to be anything over-the-top. Maybe she’s an office manager…who is an amazing cook. Maybe he’s a rebellious teenager…who is unusually perceptive. As soon as that character is really good at something, the reader perks up. 2.

This is so effective that screenwriters often use a “save the cat” scene (and the better the screenwriter, the subtler the scene) near the beginning of the screenplay to make the audience like and identify with the character. As soon as you show the character genuinely caring about the world, the reader starts to care. 3. Hands-down, one of the best pieces of writing advice I’ve ever received in my life. 4. In the dark- The actual meaning for this would be that there is no light were you are, but the meaning of the idiom is that you don’t know what’s really going on. They didn’t want her to know, so they kept her in the dark about it. Inside joke- These words don’t make much sense together, but the meaning of this idiom is that it is a joke that only certain people will understand; maybe those inside the circle of friends. Idioms are fun to read, but they’re even more fun to use in your writing. Free Printables for Teachers - flashcards, printable games, worksheets, phonics materials, conversational activities.

Läsförståelsestrategier på svenska och engelska

Som språklärare har jag inte fått någon formell utbildning kring detta, så inspirationen för min del kommer från nätet. Jag har tittat på de jättetydliga filmerna som Susanne Nystedt har gjort, kollat in Josef Sahlins sida, kikat in på En läsande klass och läst Annika Sjödahls tydliga beskrivningar. Grunden för dessa strategier ligger hos Barbro Westlund och hennes bok Att undervisa i läsförståelse. (1) Engelska i åk 6-9. Famous People English Lessons: Biographies and ESL Lesson Plans.
