Even now, as studios childishly duke it out by having their versions of the “anti-romantic comedy” (No Strings Attached, Friends with Benefits, anyone?) , it’s hard to do anything else, but bury your face into your hands out of sheer contempt. However, romantic comedies as a genre never used to be across-the-board bad. In fact, two of Woody Allen’s greatest movies — Annie Hall and Manhattan — are romantic comedies.

And yes, even in the last 10 years, there’s been wide releases such as 40 Year-Old Virgin and Forgetting Sarah Marshall that have stuck a balance between critical and commercial success in the realm of romantic comedies. This isn't just another round of familiar titles that fanboys love and think aren't appreciated enough (yes, we all know Edgar Wright's work is underrated). "Wet Hot American Summer" and "Better Off Dead" are properly represented, but most of the choices are films I've never even heard of -- including number one pick, "The Gigolos" -- let alone seen. I can reel off the best foreign films of the year without pause and feel fairly confident that I haven’t missed anything notable, but best of the decade? Adding to the difficulty is the fact that of the thousands of films released each year in other countries very few of them actually ever reach our shores in any official capacity. Then there’s the issue of release dates… do I use the year the film was first released or the year it finally reached the US?
