Gear Ring Is Like Mechanical Catnip to Nerds | Gadget Lab | Wire. “Stop playing with your ring!” This is something you have probably all heard at one time, as you twiddle away with your fingers and annoy the hell out of the people around. Well, those intolerant fools can suck it: the Kinekt Gear Ring is *made* for playing with. The surgical steel circle has two bands running around the outer edges with teeth that engage six tiny cogs that spin between them. These cogs mesh with the teeth and make a finger-band that will be impossible to stop spinning.
Want to see a video of it in action? Sure: Kinekt Gear Ring video (.mov). (Sorry, the embedded video we had here earlier disappeared.) The ring will cost you $165, Buying one as a gift for a geek-in-law is like buying a drum-kit for your nephew: the giftee will love you. Accelerated particles: Housed in a 27-kilometre-circumference tunnel under the French-Swiss border, the LHC is expected to be up and running by July or August. Credit: CERN GENEVA: The world’s biggest atom-smasher, now close to completion at the CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) laboratory near Geneva, is a study in big numbers: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will whiz protons to 99.9999 per cent of the speed of light in two parallel beams in a ring-shaped tunnel, 27 kilometres (16.9 miles) long and up to 175 metres (568 feet) below the ground.
The tunnel straddles the French-Swiss border. In top gear, the LHC will generate nearly a billion collisions per second. Undersea Explosion - LiveVideo. Offshore Wind May Power the Future. The waters of the Jersey Shore may soon become home to the nation's first deepwater wind turbines.
New Jersey officials recently announced the state would help fund an initiative by Garden State Offshore Energy to build a 350-megawatt wind farm 16 miles (26 kilometers) offshore. The state wants by 2020 many more of these parks, at least 3,000 megawatts worth, or about 13 percent of the state's total electricity needs. "This is probably the first of many ambitious goals to be set by states," says Greg Watson, a senior advisor on clean energy technology to the governor of Massachusetts. "Three thousand megawatts is significant.
With that you're able to offset or even prevent fossil fuel plants from being built. " The federal government is about to open up to wind energy development vast swaths of deep ocean waters, and states and wind park developers are vying to be the first to seize the new frontier. The U.S. Some groups say the rules leave too many barriers for developers to overcome. Telescope can find oodles of Earths: NASA | Science. 10 Bizarre Predictions That Just Might Come True. Predicating the future used to belong to the world of psychics and mystics, but now you don’t need to be Nostradamus to see what the future holds. In fact, scientists are increasingly making bold predications about the future. If some of their forecasts are right then we could be living in a "brave new world". We take a look at 10 bizarre predictions that might just come true. 10. What would you do if you could be invisible for a day? 9. If Isaac Newton or Benjamin Franklin were into photography, their photographs might look something like these: “Wooden Box with Horseshoe Magnet” “Atomic Model” “Demonstration with Hair Dryer and Aluminum Foil” “Candle in a Vortex of Water” “Fifteen Hours” Regarding his work, Charland tells us, Wonder is a state of mind somewhere between knowledge and uncertainty.

Are Microsoft and Google in a space race? We think they are. Their rivalry is also, we believe, a precursor and a model for the next great post-Internet technology boom: space exploration and development. Microsoft just released its new Worldwide Telescope, which will access images from NASA's great fleet of space-born telescopes and earth-bound observatories such as the future Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, partially funded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, which is projected for ‘first light’ in 2014 in Chile's Atacama Desert -the world's Southern Hemisphere space-observatory mecca.
The 8.4-meter telescope will be able to survey the entire visible sky deeply in multiple colors every week with its 3-billion pixel digital camera. The telescope will probe the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy, and it will open a movie-like window on objects that change or move rapidly: exploding supernovae, potentially hazardous near-Earth asteroids and distant Kuiper Belt objects. Breaking the Sound Barrier. Whoa, California Uses More Gas than China? Doesn’t seem possible but California is the 2nd largest user of gasoline in the world! From Treehugger, check this out! Well, wonders never cease. Talk about a state that needs to wake up and smell the biofuels (except corn ethanol)! Given all the news coverage about the rise of the Chinese economy, you could be forgiven for thinking that the world’s most populous country is hogging all the world’s resources, while the developed nations are fighting for scraps.
But, at least with transportation fuel, you’d be wrong. California alone uses more gasoline than any country in the world (except the US as a whole, of course). That means California’s 20 billion gallon gasoline and diesel habit is greater than China’s! One more choice statistic: gasoline usage in California has increased 50 percent, that’s 6.7 billion gallons, since 1988. 473.jpg (JPEG Image, 640x427 pixels) HYDROGEN POWERED VEHICLE CONVERSIONS WILL REVOLUTIONIZE ALL INTE.
The Hydrogen Powered Car! Almost everyone knows that any gas powered vehicle can be converted to run off of Hydrogen gas. There are those few out there who are doing just that. Even some city governments use Hydrogen powered vehicles. One method is to produce your own Hydrogen at home using a few solar panels supplying the necessary power to crack (create) the Hydrogen from water in an enclosed tank.
During the night, the Hydrogen that was cracked during the day is pumped into a Fuel Cell located in the vehicle where it's slowly absorbed and stored in a very safe manner. The Fuel Cell contains Metal Hydrides that soak up Hydrogen like a sponge soaks up water. When Hydrogen gas is needed, the Fuel Cell is heated which releases the stored Hydrogen and is then supplied to the engine of the vehicle. So why, do you ask, aren't we running all of our vehicles on Hydrogen??
Here is the reason... POWER and GREED! Will we ever see the day when water powered vehicles become a reality for everyone? Landshark Lager.
