How the Kangaroo Got Her Pouch. An old wombat, who is a god in disguise, is treated kindly by a mother kangaroo, and offers her a way of keeping her joey close by—a pouch on her belly to carry him in. The kangaroo accepts and asks that the same gift be given to the other marsupials. The one with a generous heart wishes to include others when good fortune comes her way.

Long ago the kangaroo was grooming her joey on the bank of a brook. They liked to listen to the water burble as the mama combed her baby’s fur. “Oh dear,” the kangaroo whispered to her baby. The mother kangaroo thought she heard the sound of weeping. “What’s the trouble, friend wombat?” “Huh?” “I did,” said the kangaroo. “I’m blind,” the wombat replied. The kangaroo, who had a tender heart, said, “It’s not as bad as all that. Suddenly she remembered her joey! She found her joey asleep under a gum tree. The “stolen generation” means the 10,000 Aboriginal children who were forcibly removed from their parents and adopted by white families. Babies, toddlers and youngsters were often snatched from their mother’s arms or secretly kidnapped.

The idea was to “breed out” the Aboriginal colour, which was based on the belief that Aborigines were a doomed race. This policy of integrating mixed-race children into white society started in 1910 and only ended in 1969. Forty years after it ended, newly-elected Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will make the formal apology in a parliament address on February 13. Aborigines were delighted with the historic news. 1. 2.
