Two Lists You Should Look at Every Morning - Peter Bregman. By Peter Bregman | 11:00 AM May 27, 2009 I was late for my meeting with the CEO of a technology company and I was emailing him from my iPhone as I walked onto the elevator in his company’s office building. I stayed focused on the screen as I rode to the sixth floor.
I was still typing with my thumbs when the elevator doors opened and I walked out without looking up. Then I heard a voice behind me, “Wrong floor.” I looked back at the man who was holding the door open for me to get back in; it was the CEO, a big smile on his face. He had been in the elevator with me the whole time. The world is moving fast and it’s only getting faster. So we try to speed up to match the pace of the action around us. But that’s a mistake. Now is a good time to pause, prioritize, and focus. Some people already have the first list. How to Make a Schedule You Can Stick To. Have you ever been surprised at how much you can fit in when you’re at a conference? When we have a schedule provided for us, we manage to get from one event to the next at the right time; the imposition of external timings means that even if we’d like to stick with one task a little longer, we move on quickly. We deal with emails in brief breaks, sending shorter replies than usual, ditching any junk without even opening it. In day to day working life, though, we tend to find ourselves struggling to stick to self-imposed schedules. One or two things overrun; emails and phone calls come in; our boss dumps an urgent task on us. However beautiful your schedule looks, just writing it out isn’t going to help you.
Don’t Over-Plan The biggest mistake which most of us make when it comes to scheduling is to over-plan. Whatever your job, you’re almost certainly going to have to face all sorts of little interruptions and hold-ups. Build in Margins …and so on. The Art of Now: Six Steps to Living in the Moment | Psychology T. A friend was walking in the desert when he found the telephone to God.
The setting was Burning Man, an electronic arts and music festival for which 50,000 people descend on Black Rock City, Nevada, for eight days of "radical self-expression"—dancing, socializing, meditating, and debauchery. A phone booth in the middle of the desert with a sign that said "Talk to God" was a surreal sight even at Burning Man. The idea was that you picked up the phone, and God—or someone claiming to be God—would be at the other end to ease your pain. So when God came on the line asking how he could help, my friend was ready. "How can I live more in the moment? " he asked. "Breathe," replied a soothing male voice. My friend flinched at the tired new-age mantra, then reminded himself to keep an open mind. "Whenever you feel anxious about your future or your past, just breathe," continued God.

About 15 years ago I suffered from a serious case of Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome, where I was most awake between 1-3 AM, and couldn't get out of bed before 9 or 10 AM. It didn't help that I had a high tech/dotcom job where I could roll in at 10:30, no problem. Watched a little TV, and went to bed. Once the lamps came on, I sat in front of the light box on my computer for 30 minutes. I had a hard time the first week or so, then my rhythm shifted.
