According to Wikipedia, Chiaroscuro (English pronunciation: /kiˌɑːrəˈskjʊəroʊ/, Italian: [kjarosˈkuːro] “light-dark”) in art is characterized by strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition. It is also a technical term used by artists and art historians for using contrasts of light to achieve a sense of volume in modeling three-dimensional objects such as the human body. In practice, chiaroscuro is obtained by having strong light and dark contrast between the body and background on each side of the subject.

This means placing the bright side of a subject in front of a dark background and lighting the background on the shadow side of the subject. This really gives a sense of volume and shape and will work well for a head shot or a figure. Here, the subject is placed in front of a grey seamless background.
