This may just be the best TED Talk video I've seen: listen.com/Rhapsody founder and extremely funny person (and soon-to-be debut science fiction author) Rob Reid examines the math behind the claims made by the copyright lobby and explains the mindbending awesomeness of the sums used to justify SOPA, PIPA, ACTA and the like. Here's Ars Technica's Ken Fisher discussing Reid's philosophy: Reid’s goal was to capture and represent some of the rhetoric from that past decade and a half in a way that would fill the hall with laughter, even if some of it came at the expense of some clearly ridiculous industry arguments.
Netflix is on an unrelenting hunt for new content, and is snatching up partners wherever it can. The latest additions to the service's library of content are the popular TED Talks, which are available on Netflix right now in the U.S., Canada, Latin America, UK and Ireland. Netlfix, however, won't be presenting the content in three or even fifteen minute bursts. Instead, the service plans to group the talks in two-hour blocks according to their general themes - space, nature, sex, etc. Fourteen shows hit Netflix in the first batch, with Netflix planning to add more as time goes on.
The non-profit foundation behind the enlightening TED conferences has launched a YouTube education channel called TED-Ed. Consisting of animated videos less than 10 minutes long, the channel is an "invitation to teachers around the world to submit their best lessons." After an entry has been accepted, staff will work with the teacher involved to compress and refine the information.
The two annual TED conferences, on the North American West Coast and in Edinburgh, Scotland, bring together the world's most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes or less). On TED.com, we make the best talks and performances from TED and partners available to the world, for free . More than 1400 TED Talks are now available, with more added each week. All of the talks are subtitled in English, and many are subtitled in various languages. These videos are released under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND license , so they can be freely shared and reposted.
