The Startup City You Probably Haven’t Heard About: Building Community in the Hills of Tallahassee. Starting With What Comes Next It’s hard to hear in the room by the railroad. There’s 100 or so people staggered about, talking in tight circles between sips of local beer (I’m told it is a saison brewed with malted rye). We’re tagged with white rectangles humanized by the Sharpie script of hand-written names.

My first-name/last-name combo is terribly out of square with the name tag, which I can’t blame on the malted rye since the name tag happened first. One of the tallest guys in the room stands up on a chair and calls for everyone’s attention. Crazy Town, USA There are some cities that give you everything you need and others that make you work for it. With over 375,000 (140th on the list of U.S. metros), the Tallahasssee, Florida MSA is a statewide player by virtue of housing the capitol and a regional force thanks to its otherwise secluded location.

A New Way to Look at Competitors. Every startup I see invariably puts up a competitive analysis slide that plots performance on a X/Y graph with their company in the top right. The slide is a holdover from when existing companies launched products into crowded markets. Most of the time this graph is inappropriate for startups or existing companies creating new markets. Here’s what you need to do instead. The X/Y axis competitive analysis slide is a used by existing companies who plan to enter into an existing market. This slide typically shows some price/performance advantage. But today most startups are trying to ressegment existing markets or create new markets. We need a different way to represent the competitive landscape when you are creating a business that never existed or taking share away from incumbents by resegmenting an existing market.

Here’s how. The Petal DiagramI’ve always thought of my startups as the center of the universe. Lessons Learned Listen to the podcast here Download the podcast here. The Government Starts an Incubator: The National Science Foundation Innovation Corps. Over the last two months the U.S. government has been running one of the most audacious experiments in entrepreneurship since World War II. They launched an incubator for the top scientists and engineers in the U.S. This week we saw the results. 63 scientists and engineers in 21 teams made 2,000 customer calls in 8 weeks, turning laboratory ideas into formidable startups. 19 of the 21 teams are moving forward in commercializing their technology.

It was an extraordinary effort. Your Country Needs YouIn July I got a call from Errol Arkilic, a program manager at the National Science Foundation (NSF), the $6.8-billion U.S. government agency that supports research in all the non-medical fields of science and engineering. “We’ve been reading your blog about your Lean Launchpad class.” Wow, that’s nice, I thought, a call from a fan. “Our country needs you.” “That’s great, maybe I can set up a class for you next year,” I replied. So of course, I said yes. (The class syllabus is here. Easel.ly | create and share visual ideas online.
