Techmama : . @NokiaUS - new Nokia Lumia... 6tag. Nokia Lumia 1020 wins blind camera shoot-out by a long shot. PhoneArena has run a blind comparison poll between some major smartphones with supposed good cameras last week, and delivered the results this week.

For the test the shot several scenes using a HTC One, LG G2, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, Samsung Galaxy S4, and Nokia Lumia 1020. All photos were resized to 13 megapixels and all EXIF data removed. Readers were then asked to vote for the unnamed camera with the best-looking pictures. After more than 5000 votes the results were rather clear. The Nokia Lumia 1020 won by a long shot, taking more than 62% of the votes, showing Nokia has finally found a way not just to take technically good pictures, but also those the public find appealing.

Next was the Samsung Galaxy S4 with 20.9%, followed by the iPhone 5c with 11.4%. The iPhone 5c appears objectively to produce unattractive pictures, and the same can be said for the HTC One and the LG G2, suggesting those who want their pictures to look good to most people should probably stay away from the devices. How can I block calls on Windows Phone 8? Tips: Use Your TouchSmart PC at a Wedding! Ah, weddings. Joyous days filled with love – and one big pricetag hanging over it if you’re not careful. But I met someone recently that had a really cool idea: Why pay for something like a photo booth when you can just make your own with a TouchSmart PC? Industrious, nerdy newlywed Kristine Ream told me how she did it (and more). TheNextBench: Tell us about yourself and your husband – do you fancy yourselves techies / nerds / whatever?

Kristine Ream: I guess you could call us a nerdy couple as we actually met on Craigslist. I am a little bit of a tech junkie - I get excited about new technology and feel like I want to have the most updated stuff (unfortunately this is not the case with my laptop. womp womp...). TNB: Did you have the TouchSmart as your PC for a while before the wedding? KR: I have had my TouchSmart for nearly three years. TNB: What gave you the idea to use your TouchSmart at the wedding?

TNB: So for the wedding, you were mostly using it for photo booth duty. TNB: NICE! Blog.laptopmag. Perhaps the most controversial feature of Windows 8 is the new Start screen that replaces the traditional start menu and Start button. For traditional windows users who like to work on the desktop, being transported to another screen just to click a shortcut that brings them back to the desktop seems jarring.

Usability expert Raluca Budiu has even called this sudden loss of context a "cognitive burden. " Microsoft heard user complaints but intsead of bringing back the old-fashioned Start menu in 8.1 it put a Start button in the lower right corner of the screen that takes you straight to the Windows 8 Start screen. This isn't much of an improvement, because users already had at least four different ways to get to the Start screen, including the previously invisible Start button that sat in the same space and appeared when you hovered the corner.

New Microsoft Surface Tablets Said to Launch in June. The son of Surface is coming. Or maybe sons. According to Digitimes, Microsoft is readying the next generation of Surface tablets to be unveiled at its Build event in June. The site says Microsoft will debut 7 to 9-inch devices to compete with the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire. The Build event will also see the launch of Windows Blue, a Windows 8 update that promises several improvements, including the ability to boot straight to the desktop. Announcing new Surface tablets at the same time would help Microsoft hammer home the message that it’s hardware and software teams are working closely together, a la Apple. MORE: 8 Rumored Features of Windows Blue So far, the Surface and Surface Pro haven’t exactly set the tablet market on fire. A low-cost tablet is critical for Microsoft to woo consumers, and Intel’s CEO predicted that Windows 8 touch devices would sink to $200 last month Such a device could run Intel’s upcoming quad-core Atom chip (codenamed Bay Trail).

Checklist: Ready to Upgrade to Windows 8? With all the talk about Windows 8 coming out, how do you know when it’s time to upgrade the OS versus buying a new PC with Windows 8 pre-installed?

First, let’s look at the system requirements for Windows 8 from Microsoft’s site:Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 (more info)RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver Additional requirements to use certain features: OK, now you need to ask yourself a couple questions: - How slow is my PC?

Is it feeling sluggish and does it seem like it takes forever to get things done? - Does it have the processing power I need? - What ports and connectivity does it have? Here are some tips to try: - If your PC feels sluggish, consider cleaning up and defragmenting your hard drive. . - Lack of hard drive space can really slow down a PC. . - Check for the latest updates and drivers. Windows 8 Keyboard Shortcuts [LIST. Advertisements Whenever you make the switch – from iOS to Android, or Windows to Mac, for example, things can seem a little daunting at first, and although elements may look rather similar in places, they don’t always function in the manner in which you are used to. While the changes in Windows 8 aren’t necessarily as different from previous versions of Windows than they are to, say, OS X, current Windows XP / Vista / Windows 7 users still might feel as though they’ve been dropped into unchartered territory, and might find Windows 8 a little tricky to get to grips with.

Anticipating this, Microsoft has prepared a relatively lengthy list of your everyday keyboard shortcuts to help you become acquainted with the new operating system. It doesn’t list every single shortcut available, but for your day-to-day needs, it does include most of the important ones. And to think, that’s only a fraction of the total number of keyboard shortcuts available on Windows 8! (source: MSDN Blog) Windows 8 Tip for Easy Access to Start Screen. For those of you who have upgraded to Windows 8 (it is only $39.95 if you missed my post), here is an easy tip for you. The Start Screen with all the tiles you can get to by hovering then clicking in the lower left corner, touching lower left corner if you have a touch capable device, you can hover or touch the top right corner to bring out the sidebar and click the Start Screen icon there also. But the easiest way on a traditional desktop or laptop with a full keyboard is to simply tap the Windows key.

That is the one that has the little Windows symbol on it. I’ve circled it in yellow in the image for you. By the way, if you tap it again, your screen will minimize the Start Screen and go back to where you were. Today is the official launch date of Windows 8. I will be heading to my local Microsoft Store to check out the new devices, but all the information can also be found on the Microsoft Store online.

I have seen Windows 8 demos but not had a chance to review the new devices (which I look forward to in the future). But yesterday I did have the chance to watch the NYC Windows 8 launch webinar. These are my notes from the launch presentation covering what I thought were the key items discussed: The (Windows 8) concept is gives you “access to what you use more frequently, websites you like and people you want to connect with.

Glance and you will know what is going on in world – Windows 8 keeps you connected to all stuff in the cloud. It is natural experience (a new look)– log in just once (lights up with your life). “Many new Windows 8 devices are touch enabled – but also work with keyboard, mouse and stylus. There are three Windows versions: Windows 8 , Windows RT and Windows PRO. Related: Microsoft Surface Full Specs Revealed, Touch Cover Fingers-On. Get ready for a whole new type of tablet. Today, Microsoft announced pricing and started accepting pre-orders on Surface.com for its long-awaited Surface tablet with Windows RT. Starting at $499 with 32GB of internal storage but no keyboard cover, the Surface is also available with a black Touch Cover for $599 or with both a Touch Cover and 64GB of storage for $699.

Colorful Touch Covers with flat keys are available in five colors for $119 while a black Type Cover with tactile keys goes for $129. First shown in June, the 1.5-pound Surface features a 10.6-inch, 1366 x 768 screen with 5-point touch, a quad core Tegra 3 CPU and 2GB of RAM. However, the real star of the show with surface is its optional 3mm Touch Cover which comes in blue, red, pink, black and white colors. In an extensive lab tour at Microsoft headquarters, we had a very brief opportunity to type on the keys and were impressed by how accurately we were able to hit them, despite the total lack of tactile response. Reserve your copy of Windows 8 Pro and Pre-order Windows 8 PCs today! As far as upgrading it was a big fail for my system.... I upgraded from windows 7 ultimate to the windows 8 release preview and had notthing but crashes... missing taskbar... interface running slow and soon as I hit the task manager system froze.

Thank goodness I did a backup image first... took 11 hours to restore... whew... But I did install a fresh copy of Win8 before the restore just to ensure my system could handle it fine which it did running on 2 SSD in Raid 0 this new OS is fast.. (no support for Auzentech Xmeridian sound card though... had to use onbard realtek bleh).I will definetly be doing a clean install of Win8Pro for sure. I did hower come across during testing various machines that anything with Cmedia sound chip or soundcards using Cmedia chips especially the CMI8788 and CMI8787 do not work fully ir not at all.

Samsung isn’t the only one with a Windows 8 hybrid up its sleeve. PocketNow has obtained photos of just such a device hailing from Sony, and the Sony VAIO Duo 11 looks attractive enough — and business-friendly enough — that it might just give the Microsoft Surface tablet a run for its money.

The website’s source didn’t divulge any information about the hybrid’s actual hardware components, but the “11″ in “VAIO Duo 11″ likely signifies the screen size. Digging into the images, it looks as though the VAIO Duo 11 will run Windows 8, given the appearance of a desktop version of Office in one of the pictures. Every image features a prominently displayed stylus and the keyboard is backlit. Speaking of the keyboard, it appears as though Sony has opted to include a built-in, slide-out keyboard similar to the one in the Asus Eee Pad Slider rather than a Surface-esque optional stand or a detachable keyboard like the Samsung Series 5 Hybrid, which sports a magnetic connection at the hinge.

TechMama: Take Charge of Windows 8′s New Parental Controls. Microsoft has beefed up its tools to keep your kids safe. The official release of Microsoft Windows 8 is just around the corner, but I’m looking forward to much more than its snazzy new interface. As a mother, I’m especially interested in the new tools that will help keep my kids’ Internet experience safe and age appropriate. Setting up Windows 8 Parental Controls is a simple as 1) creating a Microsoft User account (also called Windows Live ID) for each child, and 2) clicking on the Family Safety Box (that turns on Family Safety) that monitors your kids’ access across all Windows 8 devices in the house.

The service also emails weekly reports straight to your email inbox. I especially appreciate that there are no required “additional downloads, installation wizards, or configuration steps,” as confirmed by the Building Windows 8 blog written by the Windows engineering team. The Microsoft account/Windows Live ID is simply an email address and password. Recommended by.
