Coming Oct. 18: DiscoveryBeat 2010 speakers to explain the secret recipe for getting content noticed. VentureBeat is gearing up for our second annual DiscoveryBeat 2010 conference and are pleased to announce our first speakers.

Our conference on Oct. 18 — expanded to a full day of proceedings — will highlight the evolving landscape of discovery — the key problem of how to get your content noticed. Last year, it was complicated enough as app developers tried to make their wares stand out on Facebook and the iPhone. But now, with so many new platforms coming into the picture, app makers and their partners have to worry about how to get their content noticed on many different platforms at the same time. The speakers include Peter Relan, founder of incubator YouWeb; Sebastien de Halleux, co-founder of Playfish and vice president of business development at EA Interactive; Si Shen, chief executive of mobile social game platform Papaya Mobile; and Marc Gumpinger, chief executive of mobile social gaming platform Scoreloop.

MYSTERY: A new era of mystery has begun. Five of the Best Tablets Revealed So Far. Parenting While Connected Isn’t Multitasking, It’s Child Abuse. It was a pretty disturbing sight. One day this summer I decided to take my two kids to a local park for a picnic lunch and some fun on the playground. And what did we encounter just as we plopped down on a bench? A mother arguing with her husband on her cell phone in front of her kids. This went on for five minutes, until they got in their car and drove away. Playtime over. I looked to my right and saw another mom pushing her daughter on the swing with one hand and checking for incoming text messages with the other. Next to her was another mom pushing her daughter with two hands. Yes, driving while texting is dangerous, but so is parenting while connected. If your child has to constantly ask you to put your BlackBerry down—or your laptop, or your iPad—when you should be paying attention to him or her, there’s a problem.

According to a recent study conducted by MIT researcher Sherry Turkle, children feel hurt when they’re forced to play second fiddle to their parents’ tech toys. Stanford student creates YouTube Instant, gets job offer from YouTube CEO. Search Blog » Blog Archive » Back to the Future: Innovation is Alive in Search. Posted September 10th, 2010 at 1:10 pm by Yahoo! Search Categories: Search While many have suggested that innovation in the search experience is waning, we celebrate industry enhancements that build upon past innovation. As reminded by Search Engine Land, the notion of predicting a given user’s intended search was first introduced by Yahoo!’ S “Instant Search” feature in 2005. We (and Instant Search) were ahead of the curve, and users let us know it.

At that time, even search engine guru Danny Sullivan referred to the feature as a “weird one.” Though the advancement came too early for some, and the results were too overwhelming for others, Yahoo! In 2007 we expanded on the “Instant Search” function with a new tool on the Yahoo! Since we first developed this intellectual property in 2005, the average person’s appetite for information and content from the web has grown. Watch this space. Shashi Seth Senior Vice President, Yahoo! Facetime coming to iChat, Windows? | 9 to 5 Mac Facetime coming to iChat, Windows? | Apple Intelligence. Mac4ever this morning posts that Facetime, Apple’s open source video chatting protocol, will be coming to iChat very soon, adding desktop Macs to the machines that are able to video chat with Apple’s camera-wielding iOS devices.

Even more interestingly, they say Apple is working on a Windows Facetime application as well. ORLY? If that weren’t enough, they say that Apple iLife ’11 (sans iDVD) is coming very soon. Mac4ever, you’ll recall, had a wide ranging report last year predicting, amongst other things, the Magic Mouse, new aluminum remote and iPad. At that point they said iApps would be 64-bit and for Snow Leopard only. Greatest Hits of TED Videos. Apple's App Store Review Guidelines: 'we don't need any more fart apps' EXCLUSIVE: Verizon Dropping Google Search From All Future Androids? » Android Phones, Android Tips, Android News Thedroidguy.com. We’ve been working on this story since yesterday in regards to the Verizon Samsung Fascinate, A Galaxy S Phone. After the Samsung Galaxy release event in late June we discovered, as the rest of you did, that Bing would be the search on the fascinate.

We pinged Verizon spokeswoman, back on July 1, 2010 who gave us this reply: “We also have a great relationship with Microsoft and Bing is the default search engine on our feature phones. Customers may change the search engine on their phones if they like. ” However after careful review of the Samsung Fascinate we found that the “Google Search” bar is not in the Android Widgets menu, nor can you access it from market. Also we tried several APK’s of the Google Seach bar and have not been able to get those to work either. These APK’s are working on the Captivate, and Vibrant as side loads. We were under the impression that Verizon is committed to the entire Google/Android experience. Google calls for pressure on Internet censors - Technology & science - Tech and gadgets. The Future of Ad Agencies and Social Media. This series is supported by Gist. Gist provides a full view of the contacts in your professional network by creating a rich business profile for each one that includes the most news, status updates, and work details. See how it works here. To keep up with ever-changing advertising and marketing options, ad agencies are rapidly adopting new strategies and outlooks on how consumers interact with brands. While many ad agencies have been slow to adopt social media, others have been keeping up with the trends quite well.

But keeping up with change is never good enough in this industry; the most successful, game-changing campaigns are generally a bit ahead of the curve. It's not enough to hitch your star to an existing facet of viral content; you have to create the content yourself. And you can't wait for mass markets to catch up to new technologies before you begin thinking about how to incorporate new tech into campaigns and creative; you need to test how that tech will work now. Craig Aaron: Net Neutrality's New Enemy: The Mythical Mushy Middle. The fight over net neutrality is red hot right now. Since news broke that Google and Verizon were hatching a plan to carve up the Internet, millions have woken up to the fact that the Internet is in jeopardy and the would-be watchdogs at the Federal Communications Commission aren't doing much about it. Those of us who've been in the trenches the past few years defending the free and open Internet from a corporate takeover understand that -- like in any high-stakes political debate -- things can get a little ugly.

When you're challenging the interests of giant corporations like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon, you have to expect they're going to spread misinformation, call you names, hire astroturf front groups to attack you, and spend gobs and gobs of money to co-opt Congress and confuse the public. That's politics. You can't outspend these corporate behemoths; they've got hundreds of high-priced lobbyists roaming Capitol Hill. But there are two ways to fight back: with facts and with fire. Intel Infineon Deal Made Steve Jobs 'Very Happy,' CEO Otellini Says. (By GEIR MOULSON, HUFFINGTONPOST/AP) BERLIN -- German chipmaker Infineon Technologies AG is selling a unit that makes products for wireless telephones to California's Intel Corp. in a $1.4 billion cash deal, the companies said Monday.

Germany's Infineon said the sale of the wireless solutions, or WLS, unit would allow it to focus on its core business. Intel said the acquisition would strengthen its hand in Internet connectivity. WLS will operate as a standalone business, the companies said in a joint statement. The deal, which still requires regulatory approval, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2011. The acquired technology will be used in Intel Core processor-based laptops and other devices including smartphones, netbooks, tablets and embedded computers. The deal came weeks after an Aug. 2 announcement by Infineon that it was "in discussions with interested parties about a transaction" involving WLS. Larry Magid: Samsung to Challenge Apple With Innovative 'Galaxy Tab' Android Tablet. *See photos of the Samsung Galaxy Tab below*Berlin -- It's hard to know if Samsung's Galaxy Tab Android tablet will take much marketshare from Apple's iPad but based on the demonstration I saw at the announcement in Berlin, it does appear to be a serious contender.

The new tablet, which was announced at the IFA consumer technology show, is a tablet with a 7 inch TFT display that runs Android 2.2 ("Froyo"). The device, which weighs 13.4 ounces is not only lighter than the 1.6 pound iPad, it's also smaller, measuring 7.5 by 4.7 by .5 inches which makes it quite a bit narrower than the 9.6 by 7.5 by .5 inch-wide iPad. The Samsung executive who showed off the device pulled it out the inside pocket of a suit-coat and, though a bit tight, it does fit in the pocket on my sports coat. Samsung is positioning the Galaxy Tab as a device you can hold in one hand and use as you walk around. Another thing that's not clear is how well the device will work with most Android Apps. Samsung Electronics Co. and Toshiba Corp. unveiled tablet computers in Berlin yesterday, aiming to take market share from Apple Inc.’s iPad with their lower-priced “me-too” devices. Toshiba said at the consumer electronics fair IFA that the recommended price for its Folio 100 tablet in Europe is 399 euros ($511), undercutting the iPad, which goes for about 499 euros in the region. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, which like Toshiba’s Folio will debut in Europe next month, said it will let phone operators determine the price. “Looking at the iPad price, alternative tablets should be sold at below $300 to be appealing to consumers unless you have a strong brand to support the premium or a carrier to subsidize the hardware,” said Carolina Milanesi, a Gartner Inc. research director in the U.K.

Apple has sold more than 3 million iPad units since its April 3 introduction. Crowded Market Hirai said 23 companies are planning to bring tablet computers to market, making a price war inevitable. Just because the economy is still depressed doesn't mean you have to be. In fact, there are plenty of ways to live it up without seeing your bank balance plummet — especially if you know how to use social media to live the good life on tight budget.

Even the most reclusive social media shut-ins need to leave the house for some in-person networking at some point.
