The new iPhone… Update Sep 27 – Apple has sent “Let’s Talk, iPhone” ;) invites to the event. It’s time to show our cards. If you crack open the casing of the new iPhone, you will find significant upgrades from the iPhone 4. The new iPhone features Apple’s dual-core A5 processor like the iPad 2 for even faster performance, better gaming, and drastically improved graphics. Apple didn’t stop there though. Unlike the iPad 2, the new iPhone packs 1GB of RAM, according to a source familiar with the SOC’s manufacturing. The new iPhone will also feature an upgraded camera system. The new iPhone also contains Qualcomm Gobi Baseband chips that allow it to operate on both GSM and CDMA networks. Although some may be happy with the new iPhone’s substantial internal hardware boosts, the new device’s biggest selling point is actually a software feature called Assistant. Everything you could possibly want to know about Assistant is after the break… How it works: Google Announces Digital Dead Sea Scrolls Project.

Samsung Galaxy S II global sales reach 10 million. Samsung may be in the midst of ramping up its legal battle with Apple, but the company is also taking a little time out to toot it’s own horn: the company announced today that global sales of its Galaxy S II smartphones have passed 10 million units. The company is careful in its release to note the figures represent channel sales, rather than merely units shipped to retailers—Samsung got in trouble earlier this year over its characterization of Galaxy Tab sales.

“Since its launch in late April 2011, the Galaxy S II has seen continued sales success, demonstrating Samsung’s industry-leading capabilities in—and commitment to—the smartphone market” said Samsung’s president and mobile communications chief JK Shin, in a statement. “In just five months the Galaxy S II has seen tremendous growth, reflecting its tremendous popularity with customers around the world, who in selecting the Galaxy S II as their device of choice have driven the device’s strong market position globally.” AT&T to push Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update on September 27th. A cool new app that helps kids discover their inner author at Cool Mom Tech. I’ll be honest, I’ve always had a secret wish to write a children’s book. But for now, I’ll have to settle for simply living vicariously through the stories my children are creating on this cool new book-making app. With hardly any learning curve, the Picturebook app allows children (okay, and their moms) to easily create and share their own self-authored books. With templates to choose from that look just like the real deal, your kids can type up a story of their own and drag and drop in a a variety of illustrations to bring their book to life and truly make it their own.

The app comes with a bundle of pictures to get you started and additional sets can be purchased in themes like farm animals, Cinderella and ninja. It seems like these app-creators have thought of everything–the clacking of a typewriter as your children write up their stories, and tons of flexibility and ease in creating great pictures to go along with the story. Picturebook is a free app available in iTunes. 1Share. Facebook Ticker Take 2 (now with video!) | Technology for Moms - Free Tech Help & Support for Your Electronic Toys. On Wednesday, Amazon Will Unveil The “Kindle Fire”

Last Friday, Amazon sent out invites to a press conference being held this coming Wednesday. They didn’t give away any details in the invite, but given our scoop earlier this month, everyone assumed it was to unveil the new Kindle tablet. We can now confirm this is correct. And we know a bit more. On Wednesday morning in New York City, Amazon will unveil the Kindle Fire. Yes, this is the name Amazon has settled on, to help differentiate the product from the e-ink Kindles, which will still be very much alive and for sale. And while Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos will show off the Fire on stage, it won’t be ready to ship until the second week of November, we’ve learned. Everything we’ve previously reported on the hardware remains the same. Block’s sources seem very wary of this shortcut move. Amazon has also been inking last-minute deals with the likes of Fox for movies and TV shows through their streaming video service which will be a key part of the Fire. But… That’s all for now.

Google+ Now Lets You “Share” Your Circles. In case you’re still using Google+ (I kid, I kid, the other social network is doing well, apparently), the Google+ team has made it easy to “share” your Circles with friends today, by enabling an option to send other users a list of Circle members on your Google+ Circles page. Users who want to “share” the contents of their meticulously curated Circles can now click on the Share button as well as Edit and Delete in the Circles options menu and then select the Google+ user or users they want to share the Circle with. The share function doesn’t reveal the name of the Circle (so the fact that you put your boss into “People I am not friends with” stays with you) and doesn’t reveal any changes you make to the Circle after sharing. Users receiving the Circle can then make their own private edits after the fact, like adding you to “People I am not friends with” even. Says Google Engineer Owen Prater, The update should be rolling out to everyone in the next couple of hours, according to Prater.

Spotify Gains 1 Million New Facebook Users Following f8. At f8 last Thursday, music services such as Spotify, Vevo, Rdio and Mog gained the ability to publish the listening activity of their users to Facebook’s new home page Ticker. The exposure to the friends of their users through the tickers has led to big gains for some music partners. Most significantly, Spotify has gained one million new monthly active Facebook-integrated users since f8 to reach 4.4 million MAU. It spiked from 1.12 million to 3.25 million daily active users the day after f8, and appears to be settling back to roughly a quarter million new DAU. Rdio, MOG, and Deezer have also seen significant gains in their numbers of Facebook-integrated users.

The total user growth for these services could be even higher. Exposure through the Ticker could be encouraging more users to sign up but not necessarily integrate their accounts with Facebook. Spotify is falling from its peak the day after f8, with 1.61 million DAU yesterday and 1.48 million today. Apple holding iPhone 5 event on October 4 | The Digital Home. As expected, Apple will be holding an iPhone event next Tuesday at its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters. The company sent an e-mail to select reporters earlier today, saying the event will start at 10 a.m. PT next week with an "executive presentation. " Although Apple didn't specifically mention the iPhone 5 by name, speculation abounds that the company will unveil one, or perhaps two, iPhones at the event.

Rumors have been swirling for months over when Apple would finally unveil its next iPhone. Last week, All Things Digital reported, citing sources, that Apple would be holding a special event on October 4 that would be led by its new CEO Tim Cook. Related stories: • iPhone 5 to debut Oct. 4, ATD says • iPhone 5 rumor roundup • Al Gore confirms multiple iPhones coming • ZDNet: Apple preps Oct. 4 event, iPhone 5 on deck Exactly what Apple might show off at the event, though, is unknown.

Sprint Nextel will launch its own 4G LTE network early next year. The company is already installing LTE equipment and has been field testing the network in select areas, according to people familiar with the situation. It hopes to launch commercial service by the end of the first quarter or beginning of the second quarter, although the target could move up.

It's unclear how many markets would get the service initially. The LTE rollout is part of the company's broader Network Vision plan. With the costs already accounted for in its prior forecast, the LTE network won't require any additional capital investment. The accelerated deployment underscores how critical it is for the carriers to keep pace with rapidly evolving wireless technology. Sprint's 4G LTE network would give the carrier a network on par with Verizon's, supplying the nation's third-largest carrier with an additional selling point beyond attractive pricing plans and an unlimited data offering.

Mango Is a Fresh New Flavor for Windows Phones | Product Reviews. When Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system debuted, it stood apart visually from other mobile OSes. Windows Phone 7 eschewed the desktop-like interfaces seen on iOS and Android. Instead, it went with rectangular “Live Tiles” that host various apps and interactions, organizing them in a constantly cascading home screen. It was just as intuitive and overall, it functioned well. But a year later, it feels stale. Luckily, Microsoft has rolled out a juicy update to the Windows Phone family: Mango. Mango will be available as an upgrade on any Windows Phone 7 device starting Tuesday. The “Metro” UI and general navigation through the platform remain largely unchanged from Windows Phone 7, but Windows Mango (officially, version number 7.5) makes some notable improvements to the way it integrates social networking. Microsoft loaned me a Samsung Focus handset (for AT&T) loaded with the new release.

But that’s all the same as before. Blogs. STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering and math. STEM education is not only critical for preparing our future doctors, researchers, rocket scientists and game designers, it’s becoming more important for every type of job in the workforce. The problem is that most countries in the world aren’t producing enough STEM graduates. In the United States for example, the U.S. Department of Labor estimates there will be more than 1.2 million job openings in STEM-related fields by 2018, but not enough people to fill them. As President Obama remarked in his State of the Union address in January 2011, “maintaining our leadership in research and technology is crucial to America's success. Companies in the private sector need STEM graduates to create the next generation of exciting innovations, and there are incredible career opportunities for students who take STEM degree courses.

That’s the day Apple is currently expected to hold its next big media event, according to sources close to the situation, where the tech giant will unveil the next iteration of its popular iPhone. While there have been a lot of conflicting reports about the exact timing of the event, including some that pegged it as taking place this month, AllThingsD had previously posted that the rollout of the iPhone 5 would be in October.

While Apple could certainly change its plans anytime, sources said that the Oct. 4 date has been selected by the company to showcase the iPhone 5. Sources added that the plan is now to make the new device available for purchase within a few weeks after the announcement. And while the iPhone 5 is a much-anticipated handset, the event itself has a lot more importance for Apple than many previous ones. And that’s why, said sources, although he’s never quarterbacked an Apple product announcement before, Cook is certain to preside over the iPhone 5 rollout. iPhone 5, iPad 3 and LTE iPhone Mean More Monster Quarters for Apple - John Paczkowski.
