Scientists have lost battle to keep A-level exams practical. Score_benchmark_secondary. Dangers in A-level sciences grading reform highlighted. A partnership of leading science organisations, including ASE, has highlighted concerns about Ofqual's announcement today to separate practical science from A-level grades. ASE Chief Executive, Annette Smith, comments, "The announcement from Ofqual this morning and the SCORE response serve to indicate the importance of teachers’ engagement with subject associations in designing the courses which will lead to A level qualifications. In order for practical science to be taught and learned well, teachers must be well supported and school laboratory technicians should also be recognised and supported for the skills that they bring to the situation.

Blooms taxonomy. Diagnostic questions. Many of the questions and tasks we are developing in the York Science project can be described as ‘diagnostic’. That is, not only do they tell you which students have some understanding of the idea you are interested in, they also give you some information about the misconceptions of those who do not use the accepted scientific explanation. For instance take a look at this question from the Light and colour topic. The correct answer is D, but A, B, and C are all ideas held by many students (and adults). Many children may have not experienced complete darkness and will know that after the light is switched off in the bedroom at night their eyes adjust to the dark and they can see dimly. They may have seen a cat at night and seen its eyes reflecting back the light from a torch or car headlights.

Rather than ask students simply to select one of these as the correct answer you can gain a lot more information by asking them how they sure they are. Free Resources - Free teaching resources & lesson plans for teachers. Additional needs.
