An alloy specifies the precious metal content of your metal. Some alloys are pretty simple - Sterling Silver is just 92.5% (925/1000) silver, 18K yellow gold is 18/24 (typically 755/1000) gold. Others are more complicated - for example, 18K white gold also contains 14% silver.
