The notion of conceptual architecture is a contentious one: sometimes an architect takes a home design concept too far and the results are a kind of a literalist too-easy-to-understand aesthetic.
At other times, though, a concept can be an functional and organizing principle around which an entire house is designed. Inspired by unstable regional topography, this house by KWK Architects appears to wind up from the ground, a warm wooden band corkscrewing skyward through an otherwise conventional-looking modernist white home. Both inside and out, exposed steel frames the border between this intrusive band and the surrounding structure in order to clearly differentiate spaces for circulation and occupation and establish another layer of visual hierarchy. The language of white-and-wood continues throughout the house, with wooden accents and surfaces defining warm and comfortable spaces within white volumes.

Our practice must transform itself in response.” BUILD was in attendance and we took thorough notes for those of you who couldn’t make it. Moderator: Susan Szenasy (SS), Editor in Chief Metropolis Magazine, New York, NY Patricia Patkau (PP), of Patkau Architects, Vancouver, B.C. The ceremony started off with an interpretive dance which was a new twist – although beautifully done, do we really need to make this thing any more esoteric than it already is?

At 2,200 sq. ft., the space is unique as it’s a fully designated live/work space so you could either live here or have a pretty sweet office space. Listed by Teed Haze at a cool $1,550,000 USD, this 2 bedroom (or office) place also features a spacious outdoor patio. My only concern would be noise/privacy, as it does not seem like the bedrooms/offices/bathrooms are enclosed. Some might deem that the nature of ‘open-concept’ though… The building itself was built in 1916 for use as a warehouse and printing shop (thus the term ‘hard’ loft since the building had an original commercial use), and was converted into a luxury loft building in 1992.
