Curly Maple Scarflet Pattern and Tutorial

A few weeks ago I was happily cavorting in sandals and cropped pants, but now that autumn has come - that season of mists and sharp frosty nights, never mind the mellow fruitfulness - my thoughts are all directed towards keeping warm. (And the older I get the warmer I like to be.) The Curly Maple Scarflet, textured and toasty, is wonderful for covering vulnerable pulse points and making you feel cozy all over - like a little afghan for your neck. It features interlocking maple leaves at the ends, and in between, a cushy, chained variation of broomstick lace which I haven't seen anywhere else. (If you've seen it somewhere I'd love to hear about it.) Spicy Maple, about 19" long (excluding leaves) and 5" wide, was made with just under 1 skein of Loops & Threads Cozy Wool, a super-bulky yarn bought at Michael's.

Curly Maple curves nicely against the neck, and can be worn flat, or folded down around the top. Happy crocheting! You can use other yarn, but I made it specifically for the bulkier Baby’s First yarn because I hadn’t used that yarn before and wanted to try it. I was very pleased with the results, as the combination of acrylic and cotton in this yarn also makes it a bit stretchy. This is a good go-to pattern if you need a baby gift quickly, perhaps for the shower you forgot you were invited to. The pattern calls for the same stitch throughout and I’m not sure what it’s called, but it’s simple and very versatile. (I use it for scarves, hats, blankets, and even a variation for dishcloths -- see some of my other patterns linked below).

It’s called “Feather and Fan”, and it can be found in sweaters, skirts, and throws, among other things. There’s even a way to do it in crochet. I thought I’d post this pattern regardless, because it’s one of my favorites so far. It’s perfect for beginners: easy to knit up, doesn’t take very long, and looks beautiful when finished.
