Salesforce.com's New Data Residency Option (DRO) Will Widen Door for Cloud Adoption. Jeffrey M. Kaplan, Managing DirectorTHINKstrategies Despite the rapid growth of cloud-based alternatives to traditional, on-premise systems and business applications, the greatest barrier to broader user adoption continues to be lingering concerns about data privacy, security and ownership. Salesforce.com unveiled a new Data Residency Option (DRO) at Dreamforce ’11, which could eliminate this obstacle to adoption and exponentially expand the addressable market for cloud solutions. Over the past year, nearly every major market research firm has revised their market forecasts to predict faster growth of the cloud computing marketplace. Whether for compliance or competitive reasons, a substantial proportion of business and IT decision makers in organizations of all sizes remain uncomfortable about feeding their customer, patient or other corporate data to cloud-based services.

This encryption technique overcomes the most important impediment to cloud adoption. Jeffrey M. Security Fix - Salesforce.com Acknowledges Data Loss. Business software provider Salesforce.com acknowledged that a recent spate of targeted e-mail virus and phishing attacks against its customers resulted from one of its own employees falling for a phishing scam and turning over the keys to the company's customer database. On Oct. 19, Security Fix reported that payroll giant Automatic Data Processing (ADP) and several banks -- including Suntrust -- were among a number of institutions that were victimized by a series of highly-targeted phishing scams that addresses recipients by name and asked them to click on a link - which tried to download password-stealing malicious software.

A Suntrust executive alleged that the scammers obtained their list of Suntrust customers via a data compromise at Salesforce.com. A Salesforce.com executive would not answer direct questions about the incident at the time. Now, in an e-mail sent Monday to nearly a million customers, Salesforce.com is finally owning up to a data loss. Security Statement - Salesforce.
