Faced with the challenge of making better use of a tiny bedroom (7' x 12') in Manhattan, architect Benjamin Marcus conceived a lofted bed structure with stairs and desk and storage below. The room has two points of entry on opposite long walls, making it a very tight space. To make room for a full-sized loft-bed, desk and storage where before there was only a twin-sized, we removed a shallow closet which provided an extra 6 inches for the steps.
Above, we moved the ceiling-mounted light away from the center, added an L-shaped wall-mounted shelf - and reused existing crown molding to wrap the edge to better integrate it. We added a new wall-mounted light, and provided a new, frameless mirror over the bureau, and repainted with bold colors, breaking up the wall with bands of color, to emphasize the horizontal.
