Madonna - Vogue. Iconography. REM - Losing my religion. Outing Gay Songs: 20 Tunes With Homosexual Subtexts.

Sleater-Kinney - Words and guitar. Riot grrrl. "Riot girl" redirects here. For the album by Aya Hirano, see Riot Girl. Riot grrrl is an underground feminist hardcore punk movement that originally started in the early 1990s, in Washington, D.C., and the greater Pacific Northwest, noticeably in Olympia, Washington.[1] It is often associated with third-wave feminism, which is sometimes seen as its starting point. It has also been described as musical genre that came out of indie rock, with the punk scene serving as an inspiration for a musical movement in which women could express themselves in the same way men had been doing for the past several years.[2] History[edit] Origins[edit] During the early 1990s the Seattle/Olympia Washington area had a sophisticated do it yourself infrastructure.[7] Young women involved in underground music scenes took advantage of this to articulate their feminist thoughts and desires through creating punk-rock fanzines and forming garage bands.

Bikini Kill[edit] Main article: Bikini Kill Bratmobile[edit] Riot Girl: still relevant 20 years on. Nearly 20 years after its zenith, Riot Girl, the fiery flash of a feminist movement born of the American punk rock scene, is living on – its legacy playing out in the sound and ideas of a new crop of young female musicians. "If it wasn't for Riot Girl, right now I would be in a godawful heavy blues band. " Marissa Paternoster is laughing, but she is totally serious. At 22, Paternoster, the front woman for Screaming Females, is the imminent guitar heroine of the American underground – a monster of talent and skill, she shreds with confidence – and it's hard to imagine her owing anything to anyone, let alone a short-lived movement that came and went when she was still a child. Nevertheless, she is hardly alone in crediting Riot Girl for introducing her to ideas and bands that helped shape the musician she is now.

"When I finally heard [all-girl bands] Heavens to Betsy and Bratmobile, it was a revelation – it was instantly relatable, musically – it made me not want to give up. Histpdrock02.

RuPaul - RuPaul, the red-nosed drag queen. RuPaul.

Albums Singles. Ho, Ho, Ho. Ho, Ho, Ho (officially titled VH1 Presents RuPaul Ho Ho Ho) is an album of Christmas music by American drag queen and singer RuPaul, released on October 28, 1997 by Rhino Records.

Album information[edit] The album was a combination of original music, standards and comedy vignettes. Most of the traditional songs were given a campy twist. The title is a double entendre; though it is a phrase associated with Christmas, the term "ho" also refers to a whore or prostitute. The album was tied-in to a television Christmas special from The RuPaul Show on VH1. Absent from the album is RuPaul's R&B version of "Little Drummer Boy", which was recorded and released by Tommy Boy Records in 1993. Cher - Believe. Gay icon. Is Cher Still a Gay Icon? By Brent Hartinger | Today: The Flying Monkey answers all questions, including: now that pro-gay Disney owns Marvel, will we see a gay movie superhero? Have a question about gay male entertainment? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!) Q: Is Cher a gay icon? She doesn’t, or didn’t seem supportive about her daughter coming out, or becoming a man. So how exactly is she an ally? A: I asked around the AfterElton.com cyber-office, and we all had slightly different opinions on this. One person thought it didn’t change anything: she’s 65-years-old, this was her own daughter, transgender issues are complicated, and she eventually came strongly around. Two folks pointed out that an icon isn’t necessarily the same thing as an ally – but that Cher is indisputably an icon, just by virtue of her dazzle (“she’s a virtual walking Pride parade!”)

My own opinion? A: It’s a great question, but I wouldn’t count on it. Which is the real point here. Believe (Cher song) "Believe" is an upbeat dance-pop song that features Eurodance and house influences within its composition as well as several sound effects such as synthesizers and Auto-Tune. Lyrically, the song is about the personal empowerment and self-sufficiency after a painful break-up. Critically, "Believe" received praise from reviewers, being acclaimed for its club-friendly sound and Cher's vocal performance, with some critics calling it a catchy song, and listed it as one of the singer's musical highlights; they also noted the way in which Cher was able to re-invent herself and remain fresh and contemporary amidst the more teen pop-based music of the period.

Some critical commentary has dismissed the piece for its high amount of Auto-tune. It won the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording at the 42nd Grammy Awards and also received a nomination for Record of the Year. It was voted as the world's eighth favourite song in a poll released by BBC.[2][4][15] Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Philadelphia. 66th Academy Awards.
